Maya lost the ability to walk during her pregnancy. She gave birth to a wonderful son, Saba, but she herself stopped walking. It turned out that it was due to inflammation in her spinal cord. “For these four years, while my Saba was growing, I couldn’t even dress myself,” Maia says. “I couldn’t even straighten a sock on my foot. I couldn’t stand up or walk to the bathroom. I was just alive and breathing. Kristine (39 years old): “I am in excruciating pain. It’s unbearable. There are moments when I think about ending it all because I just can’t take it anymore. But then I remember—I am a mother. I have to live for the sake of my child!  She has no one but me! Who will take care of Lile if I’m gone?! We lived in Germany as refugees. After we were deported, we were left with nothing—no home, no money, no documents. My daughter’s passport was lost at the airport. When we returned to Georgia, we had to live on the streets for several days. We had no money for a hotel, so we slept near 24-hour ATMs. That was the hardest ordeal of my life!”

But this young woman is being consumed alive by stage four cancer. Two years ago, while pregnant with her third child, she was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. She was operated on fifteen times in just a month and a half. God, it’s hard to believe. Since June, she’s been unconscious in intensive care.

A veteran of the Abkhazian war breaks his last piece of dry bread in half. Robert Jakhia was wounded four times in the Abkhazian war. He never feared death—he was ready to give his life for his country. Today, this forgotten hero lives in ruins. Years ago, Robert was hit by a car,  leaving him with a damaged spine that required surgery. He has also undergone two hernia surgeries. He’s deaf in his left ear and blind in his left eye due to a wartime injury.
