Seven-year-old Lazare isn’t holding a toy in his hands – he’s holding a hoe for weeding the garden.
He can hear the voices of children playing beyond the gate, but he’s too embarrassed to go outside – he doesn’t have a single toy to play with. Aside from his hoe, he has nothing to offer his best friends.

No child in Georgia should ever feel humiliated by poverty! It’s heartbreaking that this simple truth still escapes our officials…

Lazare dreams of owning a bicycle. And what about a TV set? Poor boy tries to watch football through the old, cloudy window of his room — just to catch a glimpse of the neighbor’s TV. Many times, he’s stood there, watching the reflection of a match playing on someone else’s screen. 

This is Lazare – a 7-year-old boy from an extremely poor family. One look into his eyes is enough to feel his pain and hopelessness, the heavy sorrow weighing on his young heart. Despite his age, he’s clearly bright – you can see it in his gaze. But he keeps all his dreams locked away inside.

There he is – wearing rubber slippers, whether he’s in the garden or out on the street. Footwear like that only increases his risk of developing rheumatic conditions. He dreams of wearing sneakers, like the other kids – but only ever sees them on their feet, never his own. He goes to school in faded jeans and an old jumper. He feels embarrassed by the way he looks. Can you imagine how happy he’d be to wear a new pair of jeans and a clean T-shirt?

This faded jumper is what the child wears to school. 

Lazare (7-year-old): “I used to dream about a bicycle, but I’ve stopped. What’s the point, if dreams never come true? Our TV went out of order a long time ago. I really want to watch movies and football… A few times, I went to a classmate’s house to watch with him. I lied by not telling him that we simply don’t have a TV at home. It is embarrassing. If the other kids find out, maybe they won’t want to be friends with me anymore.”

As Lazare shared his dreams with the Fund’s reporter, he lowered his eyes in shame. Dear friends of the Fund, doesn’t this little boy deserve to have his dreams come true? He isn’t asking for anything special. Everything Lazare dreams of is something every child in the world should have – without even having to dream about it.
