“We can help summon ‘???’ But they come at a high cost and won’t come for free! Such is the harsh reality… – What caused his death?
Melana: On April 16, early in the morning, he went out for a temporary job, kissed the sleeping children, me, and left. I saw him off… Suddenly, oh God, he clutched his heart and fell at my feet.
He was our provider and the best father in the world! And now everything is on me alone! After all, I have to dress and feed everyone, and on top of that, there’s Nikoloz’s terrible illness! “Every new day, I wake up with the words, ‘God, grant us to live one more day,’ as if we’re walking through a minefield. I don’t know what we’ll die from,” Melana laments. Because I’m all alone in this whole wide world! And Nikoloz’s seizures, if we don’t have the expensive medicine, happen every 15-20 minutes.

“We can help summon ‘???’ But they come at a high cost and won’t come for free! Such is the harsh reality…
The recent death of her beloved husband transformed Melana, a caring and loving mother, into a poor widow with three boys to care for.
– What caused his death?
“When I remember my beloved dad, I can’t stop the tears…” Nikoloz whispers softly.
“He often cries so bitterly that my heart breaks,” says Melana.
“Dad promised me a bike, but he died.”
“When dad was alive, we never went hungry. But now, we eat only plain pasta.”
Luka (7 years old): “I’m the main man in the house now. Mom is a girl, the older brother is sick, and the little one needs close attention.”
Melana: “God forbid anyone to see their son’s suffering and not have the means to help! The medicines help temporarily but still bring him to a state of weakness. At one moment, he can sit quietly, and then he’ll collapse and shut down. I’m afraid he might hurt his head during those moments.”
“Nikoloz often experiences mood swings. Just a couple of minutes ago, he was smiling sweetly, and now he can get upset even with his brothers.”
– How long has he been having these seizures?
Melano: I noticed a few years ago that he rolls his eyes. Several times he fell, and then immediately got up, saying that nothing happened. He was generally a very active boy, always teasing us. We thought it was just another one of his tricks. But when these actions didn’t stop, we got worried and took him to the doctor. We were told a terrible thing: Nikoloz has a growth of unknown origin in his head that could render him incapacitated. Now he walks with difficulty, speaks unclearly. Sometimes he cries for no reason, gets nervous over trivial matters. He takes a bunch of medications, and he’s already nauseous from them…
– Oh, how much the poor little one is suffering…
Melano: Because of the seizures, Nikoloz can’t go to school. Children are scared when his eyes turn white, and he collapses. And teachers can’t take such responsibility. Because he couldn’t bear to see the suffering of our eldest, my husband died… While he was alive, we didn’t need anything. He worked day and night tirelessly to ensure our son had medications and food. But the father’s heart couldn’t take it…
– How did the children cope with it?
Melano: Our middle son, Luka, took it the hardest. His temperature rose above forty. I had a dead husband at home, and I was running around the hospitals with a child. Even now, when he remembers his father, he cries. The children miss him a lot.
– Melano, does anyone help you with the children?
Melano: There is no one to help me. My parents are dead, and the only close person – my husband – is also lying in the cold ground… I am an orphan, and my children are orphans too. It’s so hard and it hurts so much. But I have no right to be weak. I’m completely underfunded. I leave my little children and go to work. In the fall, I worked in the vineyards. Unfortunately, there is no such work now.
Luka (7 years old): Oh, how good it was with Dad! He always brought home a lot of food. And sometimes even candies. And now he doesn’t come to us. Who came up with the idea that people have to die?
“Mom says that we are each other’s friends, and no one can hurt us”
– What was your dad like?
Luka: He was the best. He promised me that he would take me to basketball. But he never kept his promise. And I love this sport so much. Even high school students can’t beat me in physical education class.
Gabriel (5 years old): And my dad promised me a bicycle and a toy car…
– Why do you think Mom can’t fulfill your wishes?
Luka: Because she doesn’t have money.
Gabriel: Yeah, not at all. I tell her, “I don’t want pasta, buy meat,” and she doesn’t buy it and cries.
“In winter, we’ll have to patch up the windows with plastic again.”
“And cover the wall with plastic to stop the wind and cold a little bit.”
“You have to walk carefully so the roof doesn’t collapse and kill you on the spot.”
Melano: With the allowance, the first thing I buy is medicine for Nikoloz, and then whatever is left. If I don’t go to work, the children are doomed to eat only bread. We have nothing. The house is in terrible condition, no beds, no bathroom. In winter, I can’t bathe the children; I have to ask someone. It’s drafty and leaking from everywhere. It’s one thing to feed the children, and another to provide them with a childhood that is somewhat close to normal. But I can’t.
