A woman who was left disabled by the 1988 Spitak earthquake at the age of 14 is now a 50-year-old single mother, raising a true man for Armenia. She lives in extreme poverty. The battery of the poor woman’s wheelchair broke a long time ago, so she can’t go even a few meters from her home. My God, that’s terrible!

HELP YOUR FRIENDS FIND THE WAY TO GOD!

These deeply moving images remain from the time of humanity’s most devastating disaster—the Spitak earthquake. The earthquake claimed at least 25,000 lives. The hearts of thousands of children took their last breaths beneath the rubble and stopped beating forever. Most of the children who miraculously survived were left disabled and scarred for life. Years have passed… a new century has come, and it seems the ‘dust’ has settled on this terrible story, much like a book forgotten on the top shelf of a library. Just a few days ago, a call came to the Chernovetskyi Fund office—a trembling, tearful woman’s voice could be heard: ‘I am Nelan from Armenia. My only son and I need your help because no one remembers us anymore.’ And so, Chernovetskyi Fund employees traveled to Armenia. When we stepped into Nelan’s home, she immediately knew we were from Georgia. Tears of joy and gratitude filled the eyes of this poor woman.

Looking into her tearful eyes, you can see how unfamiliar a compassionate, helping hand was to her. The world needs to hear Nelan’s story, and perhaps one day a filmmaker will capture her tragic life on screen.  For now, the Chernovetskyi Fund is the first to share this inspiring story of a remarkable woman. Nelan’s tragic life begins on the day of the Spitak earthquake in 1988. She was only 14 years old, and on that fateful day, she was sitting at her school desk.

In a matter of seconds, everything collapsed and was leveled to the ground. Among them was the school where 14-year-old Nelan was sitting at her desk. The city couldn’t hold the bodies of all the children… The sky darkened… What I’m about to tell you will make your blood run cold. Just days before the earthquake, Nelan had a dream of a wolf sitting on the rooftops of her school and kindergarten. When this 14-year-old girl awoke, an otherworldly force made her feel that this was no ordinary dream, unlike any she’d had before. It felt like a vision, a warning that a great catastrophe would soon come to Armenia. That very day, young Nelan warned her teachers and parents, telling them not to send children to school or kindergartens. Naturally, no one listened to the girl. And on that fateful morning of December 7, Nelan knew with certainty that ominous times were approaching. The heroic young girl wasn’t afraid; she quickly dressed and ran to school to save other children’s lives. That is true heroism! A little girl risking her life to save others. And indeed, when she arrived at the school, she begged the teachers to send the children home because something terrible would happen that day. But no one listened to Nelan, and the worst part is, when she tried to leave the school, the principal forced her back into the classroom. ‘You’re the best student, and you can’t scare the other children with excuses just to skip class.’ Poor Nelan was seated back at her desk, and at that moment, she knew for certain that death was drawing nearer over the skies of Armenia… And sure enough, moments later, there was a sound as if the earth had split open, ready to swallow everything.  In mere seconds, massive buildings, homes, kindergartens, and schools were reduced to rubble. And yes… dear reader, you understood correctly—the school where Nelan sat was also leveled to the ground. Most of Nelan’s classmates, 14-year-old angelic boys and girls, were trapped beneath the ruins, and most did not survive. Nelan was trapped as well, but miraculously, she escaped death. However, this clear-eyed, beautiful, kind girl was left disabled forever.  The brilliant student with a bright future ahead of her, at just 14 years old, was confined to a wheelchair for life. Oh, my God, it’s unbelievable!

Nelan as a child…  This photo was taken 47 years ago. Back then, she had a happy childhood. Little did she know the tragedy fate had in store for this angelic girl.

Years passed, and the little girl in a wheelchair grew up. Today, Nelan is 50 years old. If she hadn’t gone to school that day, she might not have become disabled.  Yet Nelan doesn’t regret it for a single moment. ‘If I could go back in time, I would go to school again, even if it meant saving just one child,’ she told a Fund correspondent. What a big heart she has!

Nelan’s greatest dream was to have a child. God heard the prayer of this disabled girl and gave her a son to be her angel and protector.

And what a patriot 10-year-old Narek is! He hung the Armenian flag on the wall beside his bed, and not a day goes by that he doesn’t sing a patriotic song before it. He has a warrior’s spirit and a big heart, just like his mother. Armenia doesn’t yet realize the hero who’s growing in Narek. He’s only 10, but his heart beats solely with love for his homeland.

This is how Narek cares for his beloved mother. Every day, he brushes her hair and cheers her up.  But the boy’s own heart is broken, and do you know why? Because his mother’s wheelchair battery has long been broken, and he can’t even take her out to the park near their home to get some fresh air. You heard that right! This poor woman, whose childhood ended amid the ruins of her homeland, is now forgotten by the very authorities of that homeland.

Nelan (50 years old) – “I’ve reached out to the proper agencies and organizations many times, but unfortunately…” The poor woman couldn’t finish her sentence; her voice shook, her throat felt tight, and tears began to fall. “As for the charitable foundations and organizations here in Armenia – there are many – I reached out to them too, but…  Only one foundation has ever helped me in the past. If some other country offers me to move to them and live in a golden tower, I will still never leave Armenia. I can’t imagine life without my homeland. My little boy feels the same way. I want to go outside in the mornings, but with the wheelchair battery broken, I can’t.  I’m confined to these two small rooms in my rented home. Every month, I barely scrape together enough for rent. So many times, I sent Narek to the store with only enough money for bread. Do you think we weren’t hungry for other food? But the end of the month was coming, and I didn’t want to take anything from the rent money.  Now, I can’t even pay for the apartment because I lost my job. I was working remotely from home, but then the conditions changed, and they told me I had to work offline or leave. I can’t even make it to the store with this wheelchair – how could I go to a job? Now I’m a single mother, out of work, bound to this cursed wheelchair. My poor son is growing up. He’s become a karate champion, but because we’re poor, I can’t help him reach his full potential. Today, the landlord called me multiple times. How will I pay the rent?  But I don’t blame him for anything. When I asked a representative from a certain agency (I’ll refrain from naming it) about housing, they said, ‘Your child also has to be disabled to qualify for assistance.’ Do you understand what they told me? Is that a humane approach? Despite it all, do you think I’m angry at them? But every string in my heart broke when I heard those words. This may be our last night in this home… Tomorrow, my 10-year-old son and I might be sleeping on the streets in this cold.”

What can a 10-year-old boy do? How can he reach the glass on the shelf if he can’t even reach it with a stool? So, he stands on his mother’s knees. Mothers endure all kinds of hardships for their children. For Nelan, her only angel is Narek, sent down by God.

Narek knows his mother can’t even get up from her wheelchair, so he climbs up on the edge of the bed, stretches his little hands toward the ceiling, and carefully dusts it.

“Mama, look in the mirror.  You’re the most beautiful.”

Look, is this really a bed?

That refrigerator seems like it was made in the 19th century. Nelan struggles to make soup, but by the end of the day, the soup turns sour because the fridge is broken.

Disappointed, the child showed the Fund’s correspondent that the fridge was empty.

See, a true champion is growing up in Armenia. Narek is a multiple-time winner and a gold medalist in karate. Even though he’s growing up in poverty, he still tries to handle it all on his own and fights… he fights… but unlike other children, he doesn’t just fight on the mat during competitions; this little angel fights with all his might in life, too. Perhaps, when he grows up and brings glory to Armenia on the world stage, only then will his father “remember” that he has a son named Narek. Born to a mother with a disability, the child was unwanted by his father. But God is raising this remarkable boy. And Narek’s talent doesn’t end there. The child sings with such emotion that his voice sends chills down your spine. But that’s not all. Narek is also a gifted artist. The child showed his drawings to the Fund’s correspondent. My God, he’s a true artist!

Look at these flags—take a closer look, and you’ll immediately see not only patriotism but also the intelligence in this young boy. How deep and meaningful this picture is. May the sun of his homeland one day shine brightly for Narek, too. May the Armenian flag never be lowered again as it was during the Spitak earthquake. May there be peace in Armenia and the entire world!

This is everyone’s favorite football player Leo Messi. Who knows, maybe this photo will reach Messi…

Life is unfair! This amazing boy has only one set of new clothes, bought by his grandmother with her hard-saved pension money.

That shirt and suit are the only new clothes he owns.

Nelan is constantly focused on giving her son an education. Right now, she’s teaching him English.

The poor woman, sitting in her wheelchair, washes the dishes with great effort.

Nelan asked the Chernovetskyi Fund’s correspondents to try the coffee she brewed. “You’ve come to Armenia from Georgia to help and comfort those in need. My God, I can hardly believe it. Am I dreaming?”

Narek’s heart is filled with God’s love. Every day, he prays to God – not for himself, but for his beloved mother, hoping kind people will help her. He prays for a new battery for her wheelchair, so she can finally get some fresh air.

Besides that, their tiny rented home is damp, endangering both Narek and his mother’s health.

Nelan and her little angel, Narek,

have no one else in the world but each other.

When it was time to say goodbye, this sweet boy hugged the Chernovetskyi Fund correspondent tightly. Look at him—there’s a new light in his once-sad, dull eyes, now filled with hope and shining like stars.
