0901200270High, high in the mountains of Tianeti the village of
Bochorma is situated. Wild animals have a good life there… and people are
poor. And they are especially poor in the family of Guchashvili! They are dying
of abject poverty! There’s even nowhere to beg in the mountains! Animals do not
give charity. But we’re human! And we are their countrymen! Let us be merciful,
friends. Let us save real Georgians from death! After all, Georgian villages
are the cradle of our culture.
The family Guchashvili has two sick people – 83-year-old
father George and his daughter, 37-year-old Larisa. Their state of health is
absolutely deplorable: the father suffered a stroke; he sees very badly, barely
moves and suffers from frequent shortness of breath, but his daughter is just
dying in front of his eyes. Since childhood he suffers of diabetes. During
several years this insidious disease has become extremely complicated and took
a catastrophic form. Larisa lost her teeth; she cannot walk; her liver is
enlarged and her kidneys are damaged.
45-year-old Mtvarisa is Caring for his sister and elderly
father; all her adult life she has been taking care of sick family members. 8
years ago her mother was bedridden and died literally in the hands of her
daughter. It is not surprising that Mtvarisa is in deep despair, since her
father and sister have recently completely given up, and she has almost no
strength left. However, as long as she honourably performs her duty as a daughter
and a sister, although without the help of the public, it is unlikely that she
will last so long.
We talked to Manana and asked her to share her problems and
concerns with us.
– Let’s start with
Larissa. How long has she had diabetes?
Mtvarisa Guchashvili: In
all likelihood, the girl was born with this disease, but it appeared ten years
later. I remember my sister had to go to school in the morning, but she
couldn’t get out of bed, her legs were numb, and her face was swollen. We called
a doctor who diagnosed high blood sugar. My sister was in fifth grade. She
managed to attend school for another six months and since then she does not go
to school for health reasons.
– Has she been
treated?
Mtvarisa Guchashvili: She has,
but in our village there are no such opportunities to defeat this insidious
disease. But the hungry 90s were catastrophic for her health; there was no
diabetic food, no food at all; we were just starving.
– Tell us, what is Georgiy’s
condition today?
Mtvarisa Guchashvili: She’s
practically bedridden, she has sick liver and kidneys; her teeth fell out, it
is hard for her to speak and she is dying. Half an hour before your arrival,
she decided to sit down on the bed and meet you in a sitting position, but
suddenly felt dizzy and fell to the floor. She hit the iron leg of the cursed
bed with her head; happily it didn’t fall through the hole because our floor is
completely rotten, and it is already dangerous to walk…
– I see another hole in the
left-hand corner…
Mtvarisa Guchashvili:
That’s one of our troubles. A couple of months ago, I was feeding my
sister with a spoon in my left hand because my right hand was swollen and
couldn’t hold a spoon. Suddenly I hear my father gasping from the other room, I
ran to help him, slipped and fell into the hole with one foot. My God, it hurt
so much, but it hurt even more to see the frightened faces of my sister and
dad…
– What’s your father’s
condition?
Mtvarisa Guchashvili:
After the stroke, in fact, he cannot walk; his eyes are very bad, and he
constantly presses a hand to his heart. He worked at the local cattle farm for
37 years; this house was built in 1967, but there has been no repair for 30
years.
– Does anyone help you? How did
you survive in such a situation?
Mtvarisa Guchashvili: Yes, the
conditions here are catastrophic. The ceiling leaks, the windows are plastered
with cellophane, in winter it is very cold, we are actually freezing. There is a
wood-burning stove, but we use it rarely, I try to save firewood; and what else
could I do? I don’t have enough money to buy wood, so I’m content with
brushwood…
– Your mother was sick for a
long time, too, wasn’t she?”
Mtvarisa Guchashvili: She was
bedridden for the last 10 years of her life. In fact, all my life I have been
taking are of my family. They are my flesh and blood, and I’ll go to hell if I
don’t take care of my own people. Recently I went to Tbilisi for insulin and
when I came back, I saw such a picture-my father was sitting beside his
sister’s bed and stroking her head. It turned out that Larissa had a seizure,
and dad came to the rescue. With one hand he held on to his aching heart, and
with the other he stroked my poor little sister.
– Are you a devout woman?
Mtvarisa Guchashvili: Yes, certainly I
am. You see the crucifix I hung over my sister’s bed. Every time she gets sick,
I pray. Every time my father faints, I pray. I always pray to the Lord, and
your coming to our aid is also God’s will!
– What are the immediate needs of your
family, Larisa‘s in particular?”
Mtvarisa Guchashvili: Pension and
scanty social allowance is spent on medicines for the the sister and father.
Only insulin is given free of charge. I have to go to Tbilisi to get it, but it
is too expensive for me. In addition, Larisa needs to have two blood
transfusions a year; she also needs to buy glucose meters to measure sugar
levels and a bunch of other drugs.
– What are you dreaming about?
Mtvarisa Guchashvili: I dreamed of my
own family, husband and children, but apparently the Lord decided that I should
look after the sick members of the family. You know, I thank God for
everything! Each person in life is given his own way and you need to live it
with honor, keeping the commandments. Otherwise, the road to hell is
secured.
– Could I ask Larisa a couple of
questions, can she talk now?
Mtvarisa Guchashvili: I’ll give her some
medicine so that her mouth does not overdry, and then she can talk a little
bit…
– Larisa, who do you love most in the
world?
Larisa Guchashvili: I love God
most of all! God protects me through my sister, whom I also love very much. I
address your readers with a request for help. Friends, help me to extend my
life!
– What are you dreaming about?
Larisa Guchashvili: About an hour’s
walk from here there is the old tenth-century Church of St. George. It is
necessary to rise very high, cars can’t go there. Now, my dream is to climb
this mountain, touch the walls of the Church, light a candle and pray to the
Lord, pray not only for my recovery, but for the health of all the sick
people!
Friends, we hope that you will take to
heart the pain of this young beautiful woman who is dying before your eyes. Now
your support is of great moral importance for her, as well as for her family in
general. Let’s try to fulfill Larisa’s dream together – to climb the mountain
and put a candle to God in the old Church. Well, for her part, she will pray
for you, for your health and well-being.

There is no surplus in charity!
Georgians are the kindest people on the Earth!
High, high in the mountains, in the Tianeti region, there is a village called Bochorma. Only wild animals live good there, but people live in misery. And in the Guchashvili family, three poor people are literally dying of terrible poverty! They don’t even have anyone to ask for alms, except, perhaps, the animals in the forest.
When we told you the story of this family, we had no doubt that certain people would respond the call for help! Real Georgians, those who understand that it is the Georgian villages that are the cradle of our culture.
There are two sick people in the Guchashvili family – 83-year-old father Giorgi and his daughter, 37-year-old Larisa. Their health condition is absolutely deplorable: the father has had a stroke, he sees very badly, can barely move, he suffers from breath shortness, and his daughter is simply dying in front of his eyes. She has been suffering from diabetes since childhood. Over the years, her insidious disease became extremely complicated and took a catastrophic form. Larisa has lost her teeth, she cannot walk, her liver has enlarged, and her kidneys are damaged.
These unfortunates used to live like primitive people. There were no home appliances at their home; they only saw their neighbors’ refrigerator and washing machine. And now a miracle happened! With your help, friends! God directed you to them! And you did good not for them, but for yourself! For only this is the main thing for our Lord – when we help strangers!
“Joy has finally come to our home too! I can’t believe it… I don’t know how to thank you,” – Mtvarisa, who is caring for her sick father and sister, cried with happiness. – “A refrigerator and a washing machine – I never dreamed of that, I didn’t even dare to think about that! And the blender is just salvation for my poor sister, who lost all her teeth due to diabetes. And the drugs … Oh God! They will help my unfortunate father and sister to live without pain for several months”.
– How has your life changed after our publication?
Mtvarisa: First, you gave us hope. Secondly, we finally feel ourselves as a part of civilized world! And thirdly, after your publication, representatives of local authorities visited us and said that they would fix the roof! As if we had not simply existed before you wrote about us! In short, you have brought happiness to our home.
– You can address our readers, all those people who donated money for your sister.
