Ninety-year-old Grandma Butsa shared her final wish with the Fund’s reporter: “My dear, I just want to have a bowl of meat soup.” Sigh… The sun is setting slowly… How could we ever forgive ourselves if 90-year-old Grandma Butsa leaves this world without fulfilling her last wish?  One day, we will grow old too…

Dear friends – meet Grandma Butsa – a 90-year-old Georgian woman, kind-hearted and proud as ever! She is so sweet! She has spent her long life caring for countless people in Georgia, giving her warmth and kindness without ever asking for anything in return. But now, as the sun sets on her life, she wonders if it will rise for her tomorrow… And today, she dreams of a bowl of meat soup—it even came to her in a dream last night.

She was born before the Second World War. Despite the hardships, she had a happy childhood. In 1935, there were no phones, no tablets, no fancy clothes. People read books by candlelight, knitted, and gathered in the evenings to cook and share meals together. Life was difficult, but love, warmth, and kindness filled every home. This is the world in which Butsa grew up.

As a young girl, she dreamed of having a big family. Do you know how she imagined her old age? Sitting by the fireplace, with her grandchildren climbing onto her lap, running her fingers through their tangled hair after playing outside. She would tell them Georgian fairy tales – her voice getting softer and softer as their little eyes started to close. And one by one, she would carry them to bed, tuck them under a warm blanket, and kiss them goodnight.

But nearly a century has passed, and that dream never came true. Grandma Butsa has no children, no grandchildren.

REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO THE WORK OF MERCY!

Butsa lives in the village of Etseri, in the Tsalenjikha district.

She gently stroked the hand of the Fund’s reporter – perhaps seeing in it the hand of the granddaughter she never had.

This poor, weary woman can no longer stand, walk, or even speak.  Her whole body trembles.

Her frail, wrinkled hands have lost all their strength.

Grandma Butsa is slowly leaving this world. Bedridden, she recalls her youth, sharing her memories with the Fund’s reporter.

Bedridden, she recalls her youth – when she wore cotton dresses and wove flower crowns in the fields.

Who knows? Maybe a hot bowl of meat soup would give her the strength to hold on a little longer. But her daily meals consist of nothing more than dry bread and thin, watery soup. She has kind neighbors, but they are poor too. Yet they still share what little they have with her.  She admitted to the reporter that she misses the taste of meat.

Butsa (90 years old): I long for meat… beef.

 – Grandma, when was the last time you ate meat?

Butsa: A long time ago, my dear.  Who would cook it for me?

I have no one.

Twenty years ago, Grandma Butsa bought herself a pair of floral rubber clogs with her pension money. Back then, she was full of energy – working tirelessly in her garden, digging, weeding, tending to the trees, harvesting fruit. Even after two decades, those rubber clogs haven’t worn out. But their owner no longer has the strength to wear them. The irony of fate—time couldn’t destroy her shoes, but it stole her strength, shriveled her body, and drained her last bit of energy. Now, time is slowly preparing her for the next world. But she still wants to live.

She still dreams of watering the trees in her beloved garden. Even now, lying in a dark, damp room, she can smell the blossoms of the almond trees she planted so many years ago.

Grandma Butsa is confined to a rusty bed in a wooden hut built two centuries ago. Her bones ache.

Rainwater drips from the broken ceiling onto her frail 90-year-old body.

She doesn’t even have the strength to step outside and warm herself in the spring sun. Sigh… The sun is setting for Grandma Butsa…  And who knows? Tomorrow morning may never come for her.

Would we really deny a bowl of meat soup to a poor, elderly woman?

Friends, this is one of the most moving stories we have ever shared. It has touched the hearts of our entire team, and we are grateful to God for bringing us to people like Grandma Butsa. Because now, we have a chance to do something truly meaningful. We have a chance to unite with kind-hearted people across Georgia and ensure that Grandma Butsa is never forgotten. You can write her a letter – we will read it to her, or perhaps she will read it herself. And, of course, we must repair her roof. No one – no one – should have to spend their final days in cold, damp misery in the country they love.

One day, we will grow old too…
