Little Demetre was fighting for his life in intensive care at a Turkish clinic, diagnosed with encephalitis — a severe inflammation of the brain. He was completely dependent on a ventilator to breathe. Poor little Demetre! His family, overwhelmed by grief and enormous expenses, reached out from abroad to their fellow Georgians and to the friends of the Chernovetskyi Fund – asking for help, so they wouldn’t lose their child.

And here is the incredible news you deserve for your amazing support: After the Chernovetskyi Fund urgently covered the cost of tests, treatment, and medications – totaling up to 23,000 GEL – and after thousands of people prayed for Demetre and his parents, his condition started to improve.

Demetre is now back in Georgia! For over two weeks, he has been breathing on his own! He no longer depends on a ventilator. He still has a tracheostomy, which will stay in place for about six months.

Demetre is no longer sleeping all the time – he’s opening his eyes for longer periods and even making eye contact with his mother. For Nato, his mother, the greatest joy is seeing her son’s beautiful eyes open again – her hope is finally taking root.

Demetre responds to tickling, and to pain – he even moves his legs! These are major milestones, especially considering that doctors in Georgia had given up on him – while in Turkey, they took on his case and plan to continue exploring treatment options over the coming months.
