Gvantsa, 27, is a young mother in her ninth month of pregnancy.  She works tirelessly in the fields, risking not only her own health but the life of her unborn child. What a tragedy! All of Georgia hopes for her baby to be born healthy. This is Mate, 7 years old. His pregnant mother is about to give birth, and soon, the Meskhis will welcome their fourth child into the family. In just a few days, a baby girl will be born.

But where will they bring her from the maternity hospital? To this crumbling shack—with a leaking roof, broken windows, rotting floors, and walls barely holding up. 

The heart of this young mother, so close to giving birth, is filled with sorrow and fear.

Her five-year-old son, Alexander, is sick. He suffers from epileptic seizures, convulsing helplessly, and every attack brings him dangerously close to death. 

Mate (7 years old): “My little brother is very sick. He falls to the ground and starts shaking… I feel like he’s going to die, and I start crying.  He is really, really sick.”

— Can’t your mom take him to the doctor?

Mate: No. We don’t have money. I want to build a new house, to live a good life, and to save up money.  If I had money, I’d take my brother to the doctor. I’d also buy toys for my brother and sister.

The house where this pregnant mother lives with her three small children is on the verge of collapse. She can’t even find peace in her sleep—she doesn’t know if her children will wake up safe in their beds or buried under the ruins. Just the thought of it sends shivers down the spine. 

Look at Gvantsa, 27 years old, digging the earth while carrying new life inside her. She is a mother-hero! She is a true Georgian warrior!

Years ago, this struggling family started building a small house with the little money they had saved through hard work—just to escape their crumbling shack. But they ran out of funds before they could finish it. There are just walls here. 

Desperate and exhausted, this pregnant mother reached out to the Fund, hesitantly asking if we could share her story with kindhearted people like you. We gave her our word and kept it—now it’s your turn. Let’s not wait until tragedy strikes. If we do nothing, we will never forgive ourselves.
