“Mommy, save us, we're on fire, Mommy... Saba is suffocating...”

Anna could barely understand what was going on in her house. The crackle of wood, the ringing of shattered windows, the heat, the smoke, and the inhuman screams of her children! "Mom we're dying, mom we're already dead"... Anna ran out of the room and started looking for the children, Nika and Nino ran out of the house and 16-year-old Saba was lying in his bed calling for his mother...

Anna: I don't know how I did it - most days I can barely get him out of bed, but that time, when we were on the verge of death, I picked him up in my arms and ran outside with him... the house was burning like a torch! Everything burned down. We waited for the firefighters for 40 minutes... and the longer they didn't get there, the less chance there was of saving anything. I thought the most important thing was that the kids weren't hurt. But they got such a shock they still can't recover. Nino wakes up at night screaming "we're on fire", and Nika can't look at the house without crying... they also blame themselves for everything, it's a double blow to their psyche.

"Saba weighs more than me, but that day I picked him up in my arms like a fluff"

- What happened?

Anna: It was very cold on December 16. Nino and Nika woke up early and decided to surprise me and light the stove to boil water for tea. The wood must have been raw and they - I don't know how they came up with it - poured gasoline we had for the chainsaw into the stove. So, the stove burst, and out of fright they dropped the fuel bottle on the floor and the fire broke out. The curtains caught fire, the furniture, the carpet...and then it started to spread.

"I can't forgive myself for what happened"

Nino: We were so scared, we thought we wouldn't even call Mom, we thought it would be better to burn... but then we thought Mom and Saba would burn with us, and we started screaming. Then mom ran out, took us out into the yard, and went into the fire herself for Saba. I'll never forget it. How I wanted to die that day.

Anna: Don't be silly... she says this nonsense, and then she cries. I can't explain to her that their lives are more important than any home! We were lucky to save Saba! I can't even imagine what he went through while I came to get him. He suffers from a severe form of cerebral palsy, he cannot move or do anything on his own. My children and I are arms and legs for him. But he is smarter than all of us, it is hard for him to talk, but he understands everything and can reason. Everything was made for his comfort, and now there are not even any beds. There is only one bed - for Saba and that our neighbors gave us.

"All the best is for Saba. He's number one in the family!"

- What got most damaged in the fire?

Nika: Come on, I'll show you our house. I'll tell you where everything was. Mom loved order so much.

"This was our kitchen, Mama always baked yummies"

"And this is where we slept - Mama and Saba and me and Nino"

"Right now it's a damp - we put here everything we might need later when we're renovating the house"

"And here was the bathroom ... and now we have to bathe in the basin"

- Anna, you had a beautiful home! What a pity!

Anna: My husband and I put pennies on pennies and furnished our little nest. I had such a golden mother-in-law, she helped us too. But then it was like someone cursed us and everything went to hell..

- How did your misfortunes begin?

Anna: My mother-in-law died, my husband was imprisoned, my house burned down...

- Why was he imprisoned?

Anna: The social workers considered him to be very strict with our children and put him in jail. I went to all the authorities to get him out of there. I managed to get him out after four months. Now he's in rehab and I hope we can all live together again soon. Now he comes to visit the kids sometimes. They miss him very much. He is a great father not only for Nino and Nika, but also for Saba. Although he's not his biological father.

“Many people envied our love”

- How did you two meet?

Anna: Saba was born sick, I was just a baby myself when I became a mother. I was 18 years old. When they told me that the baby was born with problems, I didn't understand anything yet. I caught one word out of the doctors' conversation - "meningitis”. I knew it was something very scary. I fell to my knees, begging the doctors to save my son. He survived, but his health was always weak. We spent the first years of his lives in hospitals. I was left alone with him. My mother was very supportive and helped me a lot. And so, by the will of fate, Mevlud suddenly appeared in my life. He took us to the hospital. He said I could call him if I needed any more help. That's how the most reliable man appeared in my life when I was having the hardest time. We became friends and then we started our family. We had Nika and one year later Nino. Mevlud does not separate children and loves all three of them.

After the fire, not a single pane of glass was left in the windows

Anna covered the windows with cellophane to create at least some comfort for her children

- Anna, what is the first thing you need right now?

Anna: What would be the first thing you would buy if you were left with nothing? I don't even know. To say we need everything is to say nothing. First of all, we need windows, we need beds, basic furniture, not to mention household appliances - who will give us such expensive things - each of us has his own problems. All the children's stuff - clothes, computers, school supplies - burned down.

"We sleep right on the floor on this mattress"

Nino: My biggest worry is that I don't have anything to put on to school. I loved to draw so much. I had drawings all over the wall. But now I can only draw with charcoal... I have no pencils, no paints.

"Now I can only draw on the walls with charcoal or chalk"

"Saba likes it when we read books to him"

Nika: I had a school laptop. Nini and I used to study on it. We loved learning. My bicycle also burned down... when I remember, tears come to my eyes. Now our only entertainment is reading books. We sit near my brother and read books aloud. Books are movies and cartoons and everything to us.

“The main thing is that we are together. God helped us to survive and will help us to go on living”

Anna: My kids help me a lot with Saba! One could say they take care of him as much as I do. When I had an operation - all my female organs were removed - my children took care of me and Saba. You should have seen how they fed us...

Nino: I still love babysitting my brother, but my mother says we have to live our childhood without worrying...

"What I'm most worried about is that there's no way I can fix our situation"

Anna: Nika and Nino have had a lot of problems, and I don't want to burden them with taking care of their sick brother, too. But now they have nothing... so we sit together all day long, trying to support each other... Now I'm going to work the land so I can have my own vegetables, because we won't live long on the children's pension alone... I want to ask you one more thing, if there is any chance, can you give me a little tractor or some kind of aid for working the land?

"Everything will be all right, dear, God is with us"

- Doesn't anyone help you?

Anna: My mother is our guardian angel, she goes hungry herself, but she always sends food for my children. I don't know what I would do without her.

- Anna, thank you for addressing us. There are so many problems for one fragile woman, and you are so strong! God give you patience.

* * *

Anna is a hero, there's no other way to describe her. This poor woman has been through a lot:  She is sick, she has had a major surgery, she has a sick son who will never be cured, her house where she created comfort all her life burned down, her beloved husband is in prison - isn't that too much for one person? But she has not lost faith in God. She knows that tomorrow will be better than yesterday, because God has given life to her children a second time - could anything be more important?

If anyone is willing to visit and help them in person, here is their address: Terjola District, Kveda Alisubani village.

Every time you can help someone, just do it, and rejoice that God answers someone's prayers through you!

We are sure that all together we will manage to save them from imminent death.
