Giorgi remembers his mother, but he remembers only one thing - how she lay in the coffin and how everyone cried loudly. After that, he stopped talking, and for the past 13 years, only his grandmother and sister Mariam can understand him now. Mariam doesn't remember their mother, and perhaps it's for the best, as their mother passed away five days after giving birth without coming into senses or embracing her daughter.

Now, 75-year-old grandmother Lali is the sole guardian of her grandchildren.  Grandma is the most beloved person in the entire universe.

"Mothers shouldn't bury their children... it's not fair…"

Lali: I would give my life for the children to be raised by their mother. Children need a mother's warmth... to have their father by their side. But what to do? Giorgi is even afraid to remember her. They follow me like little chicks. One will come and hug me, and the other will run up.

- Can you tell me what happened?

Lali: Oh! It's been 13 years, but I can't recall it without tears!  My only daughter, Irma, passed away on December 14, 2009. She was carrying Mariam when she got the flu.  She had a C-section - Mariam was born on December 9, and 5 days later Irma passed away. After seeing his mother in the coffin, 2-year-old Giorgi fainted, and then he stopped talking. They had to take him to a psychologist and a speech therapist to deal with this trauma. Now he can talk, but he speaks with difficulty. He started having seizures. To this day, he has such attacks, that sometimes I think he’ won’t survive them. He can repeat the same phrase and ask the same question all day long.  Sometimes I can't stand it, and I start crying. And he gets nervous... he asks me, "Grandma, when you die, will I die too?  And if I don't die, who will take care of me?"

"Giorgi can't do anything on his own... I've been feeding him with a spoon for 15 years now"

- He's very afraid of losing you...

Lali: Very much so!  Recently, I felt unwell, so I lay down and fell into a deep sleep. I don't know how, but Georgy called for rescuers, crying and screaming into the phone, "Grandma died, come quickly, I'm dying too."  Can you imagine how attached he is to me? Despite my age and all my ailments, I don't allow myself to feel unwell or show it to him.  I do everything possible for the children, taking orphans to Bakuriani when we receive vouchers for vacations.

Giorgi believes that if his grandmother is gone, he will die with her

- What about the children's father? Does he communicate with the children, at least over the phone?

Lali: He had his parental rights revoked.  After Irma's death, he soon left. But I don't blame him. He's a young man and has the right to build his own life... To be honest, I didn't want to live either after the death of my only daughter. I spent 10 months lying in bed. I wanted to rot alive. Parents should not bury their children! They shouldn't!      It took years for him to reconnect with the children. I want the children to know their father. Someone should take care of them when I'm gone.

Every day, Giorgi asks me to show his mother. He looks at photographs and presses them against his cheek

- Tell me about Giorgi's condition.

Lali: Sometimes he is calm, sometimes he hits his head, saying that someone is there. Sometimes he remains silent and just murmurs, and other times he talks a lot.   He can repeat the same phrase all day long. He loves his sister, she can calm him down, play with him, and talk to him.  My poor orphans... I can't give them anything... We live like beggars.

“Giorgi, let’s play together”

- What do you live on? Is it enough for food?

Lali: We receive an allowance of 650 lari and a pension.  I try to stock up on flour, potatoes, pasta, oil, sugar... but sometimes it's not enough.  I can't say that the children go hungry.  I can always bake them bread. But we have long forgotten about meat and dairy products. I can't afford to buy clothes - they wear other people's clothes.  And buying school supplies is impossible.  In case we need medications - that's a catastrophe!  It's tough!

"Allowance is only enough for food, and we can't even dream of having good doctors examine Giorgi and prescribe treatment"

- Lali, can you remember anything good from your life?

Lali: My life wasn't sweet, but my husband and I tried our best for our daughter Irma. I worked as a teacher of Georgian language and literature at school for 18 years and served as the director of a small village school in Samrekvlo.  My husband also worked hard. Then Irma moved from the village to Tbilisi to study, and I went with her. We were very attached to each other, couldn't spend a day apart. And now it's been over 13 years since I've been living without her! That's how cruel fate can be. Now I live with my grandchildren. I never had a life of my own.

“Giorgi does not want to die, Giorgi does not want to die”

- Lali, how can we alleviate your suffering?

Lali: I have one dream, to improve Giorgi’s condition. I can't dream or think about anything else. I don't have much time left to live, and I want to make sure that while I'm alive, he can eat and use the restroom on his own. Yes, he has a sister, but she won’t be able to cope, and I can't burden a teenager with such responsibility.  Look at how shy she is, not saying a word all evening. No one can dry my tears. I beg you, please help examine Giorgi, diagnose him, I want to know what's going on in his head, why he has frequent headaches.

"I don't know what will happen to the children if I die"

- Don't cry, Lali, we are with you, our readers are with you! Your life won't be the same!  You did the right thing by reaching out to us. We will do everything possible to make your life easier and bring more happiness to the children's lives.

Friends, Giorgi and Mariam are deprived of the most important thing in life - a mother's warmth and affection. Their grandmother is their whole world.  But she can't provide them with everything they need.  And these underprivileged little angels need so much. We appeal to you, please take a moment to step away from your everyday chaos and make this family's life even a tiny bit easier. The most crucial thing is to examine Giorgi and prescribe him the necessary treatment. Perhaps it will improve the boy's condition.
