"I am born for torment. Both God and people have forgotten me."

"Have you ever in your life felt the smell of fear? Perhaps you will say that such a smell does not exist, but I tell you, it does. And you know what it smells like? Four walls filled with the anticipation of death in complete darkness and loneliness!"

"I couldn't go to the doctor on time due to poverty.  That's why my finger had to be amputated."

- How do you manage to cook lunch or start the stove without sight and any external help? Is there anyone around to assist you?

Anna: Our village has become deserted. There's no one nearby; everyone has moved to the city. If I feel unwell, there's no one I can call for help. I handle everything on my own in challenging circumstances.  Sometimes those who live far away come by and help. How can a blind woman prepare lunch? That's why I only drink tea. The kettle is on the stove all day. And eating?  I've forgotten when that was..."

"I am alone in this world, forgotten by everyone.”

 - How can a blind person give themselves an injection every day?  Who helps you?

Anna: I'm classified as a first-degree disabled person. I need to inject insulin every day. Sometimes the doctor from the local clinic comes, but not every day. How can she walk in the snow and cold in winter? That's why she fills several syringes with medication and makes a supply for me.

– You've broken both legs and lost a finger... Could you tell us what happened to you?

Anna: I broke my right leg many years ago.  The situation was so complex that doctors had to replace the joint with an artificial one. I broke my other leg this summer in my backyard while going to take down laundry. I lost my balance and fell. I don't remember how I crawled back into the house! Now I can't even go to the doctor, and there's no money for treatment.  Sometimes, I forget myself because of the pain!

– What kind of help do you need the most right now?

Anna: There's nothing that can help my blind eyes anymore. The most challenging part for me is walking. Walkers would greatly assist in my mobility, but I don't have the funds for them. The doctor also said I need an orthopedic mattress, as I currently sleep on a rusty bed. In the morning, my bones ache.

Instead of an orthopedic bed, Anna sleeps on a rusty metal bed

Recently, I can hardly walk at all!  My legs hurt a lot. I take painkillers all day long.

"Kind people, I pray to God to grant you health and happiness!

Kind people, never forget that we are created in the image of the Lord on earth for people struggling with death. Do not disappoint them. Do not kill your share of the Lord in your own hearts.  We once crucified Christ on the cross, but we can redeem our sins and heal the wounds of the Lord only one way—by helping people struggling with death, those in need, and at that very moment, the Lord will be born again in our hearts.

- Mrs. Anna, are you blind in both eyes? And why did it happen?

Anna: Anna: Both of my eyes are at "zero."  Diabetes caused vision problems. And then I started having retinal detachment. I needed to see a doctor right away, but I didn't have the money, my dear.  And when I finally gathered it and had the operation, it was already too late.  Nothing helped. And now, there's no surgery or treatment possible. Blind in both eyes, I lie like a dog within these four walls.

- How do you manage to cook lunch or start the stove without sight? Is there anyone around to assist you?

Anna: Our village has become deserted. There's no one nearby; everyone has moved to the city. If I feel unwell, there's no one I can call for help. I handle everything on my own in challenging circumstances. Sometimes those who live far away come by and help. How can a blind woman prepare lunch? That's why I only drink tea. The kettle is on the stove all day. I have long forgotten about food.

- You've been suffering from diabetes for 48 years.  You take insulin every day. How can a blind person give themselves an injection every day? Does anyone help you?

Anna: Alas, 48 years – that's almost my entire life! I've been battling this dreadful disease my whole life. My soul is tormented. I'm classified as a first-degree disabled person. I need to inject insulin every day. Sometimes the doctor from the local clinic comes, but not every day. How can she come in the snow and cold in winter? That's why she fills several syringes with medication and makes a supply for me. Later, I give myself the shots. It works out somehow... what else can I do?   I'm fighting for my life. When I run out of syringes, I give her a call, and she comes.

I injured a nerve, and sometimes the pain is so severe that I can't even take a single step. I went to the doctor, and he prescribed medications that cost 500 lari. I barely managed to gather the money and bought them. There was some improvement, but over time, the pain returned.  Now I can't go to the doctor. And there's no money for treatment. Sometimes I take painkillers when it hurts a lot. Because of this blindness, many troubles happened to me. I burnt my hand on the stove. I couldn't buy ointment in the village, couldn't go to the city because of blindness. So, I endured the pain from the burn.  Then my hand got infected, and doctors had to cut off the finger.

- Do you have the status of a socially disadvantaged person?

Anna: I applied to the social agency. They came for an inspection and said that I have a very large living space, and they assigned me high scores. This house is over a century old, do they expect me to demolish it because of their scores? Look at the conditions I'm living in. My pension of 340 lari per month should be enough for me. The refrigerator I had was bought by my mother, and it broke down, ruining all my food. I had to buy a small refrigerator in installment, and I pay off the debt from my pension every month. Local authorities helped me a few times on a one-time basis.  My roof is leaking. I've addressed them with this issue, but it seems they don't care. The walls and windows are damaged.  The cold and wind walk in the house.

- What do you fear most in life?

Anna: Loneliness. There's nothing worse than that. Even facing death becomes unbearable in solitude.

- If you had children, what your life would be like?

Anna: It would be completely different! I wouldn't be so lonely, locked within these four walls. For a person of my age, there's nothing better in this world than having the company of children. Even if a mother has a difficult child, that child is still her hope.  Nothing can compare to the feeling of a mother's love for her child! Ohhh... Ohhhh...

- If you don't mind, tell me about your youth. Why didn't you start a family?

Anna: Many guys loved me, wanted to marry me, but when they found out I had diabetes, they all left. Nobody needed me. I don't know if it was their parents' decision or theirs alone. But the fact is, my dear, as soon as they learned about my illness, they disappeared the next day. But what's sad is not that I couldn't get married, but that I don't have children. But at that time, it was a different era; it was shameful to have a child without a father. They would have criticized me for that.

- Do you regret it now?   If you could go back to your youth, what would you change?

Anna: I'll be honest; I would have had a child! I wouldn't have cared about what people said. Now those people, along with their grandchildren, are in warm homes, hugging them, telling them stories, and they are happy.  And I am completely alone within these four walls. I'm not expecting anyone, and no one is waiting for me...

- You've had a challenging journey.  Despite everything, do you still believe in human kindness?

Anna: How could I not believe... I believe. As long as the world exists, kind people will exist too.

- Many kind people will read about you. What would you say to them, and what kind of help would you ask for?

Anna: First and foremost, I ask God for everyone to be healthy and happy. I don't want anyone else to suffer like me. To people, I would say – help unfortunate people, the elderly, and children in any way you can.  As for me, help me with whatever you can. I watched some programs on TV, and it helped alleviate my loneliness. I dream of having walkers for mobility. But most of all, loneliness torments me. Maybe you can come to visit me just once?  I won't be able to treat you with anything other than tea, but I'll welcome you with a warm heart.

Friends, let's support the warmth in the heart of this kind old woman, extend a helping hand to her. Sooner or later, we will all leave this world and come to the Lord. And there is only one road to God – the road of goodness!

“I will be happy to hear the sounds of footsteps; maybe someone will come to me.”
