I understand that they are little and cannot stand it,” - seven-year-old Nino tells us a terrible story about the hunger. “We are girls, but we never cry from hunger! But the boys, Temuri and Khvicha, begin to cry loudly as if this makes them feel less hungry. I understand that they are little and cannot stand it,” - seven-year-old Nino tells us a terrible story about the hunger. There are eight of them in this family and each one has its own life hack how to cope with hunger.
“If you do not think about food, you may not get hungry at all”
Eleven-year-old Shorena just never thinks about food and tells herself that ballerinas are also starving to look beautiful. It does not matter that she’s not a ballerina. Ten-year-old Tamara runs and jumps a lot, and when she gets tired, she even forgets that she hasn't eaten since morning. Eight-year-old Meri closes her eyes and thinks about yummies. Now she would love to lick ice cream and eat cookies. Seven-year-old Nino lies on her bed, stomach down, and tries to fall sleep. To sleep until mom and dad bring home bread. Five-year-old Mariam starts to draw. But four-year-old Temuri and one-year-old Kvicha start to cry. Their tummies really hurt. They can’t stand such a pain. Only three-year-old Anastasia can eat one piece of bread from morning to evening: she bites off a piece and hides it in her pocket, bites it off and hides it...
In the summer it is good in the village - you always can find something to eat. The main thing is that there is enough for everyone
Undoubtedly, it is impossible to feed eight children on the allowance alone, but there is no work at all in the village of Tsitelkhevi. Dad Ioane spends all day looking for where to earn a living. Sometimes, when there is a part-time job in the field - to cultivate the land, clean, chop wood, mom Teona also goes to work with her husband to bring home not only bread, but also pasta.
At this home there is never food for tomorrow. New day - new challenge.
Teona: In the morning I give my children bread, and my husband and I go to work. Fortunately, my aunt lives nearby, and she looks after my children. And we work - day and night. Children eat bread in the morning and then they wait for us. When hunger is unbearable, they ask someone to give them at least some food! They know that we will not come back empty-handed. Sometimes we bring buns. You should see their faces - they shine with happiness!
Little Khvicha has the hardest time. He can not stand until the evening, he is still quite a baby
- How can children survive all day on just bread?
Shorena (11-year-old): What else to do? We know that if there were more food, they would give us more. And so - we endure and wait for the parents to come. Do you know how tired they are when they come home? Sometimes they can’t even talk.
Nino (7-year-old): So, we help them! We help to wash, we help to clean up and we don’t fight among ourselves when they are at home.
“Mom and dad need help. We will bring water and soak dirty clothes. ”
“Then you need to press, like this, until they are clean. It's even good in summer. And in the winter, it’s terrible.”
- Do you fight when they are not at home?
Mariam (5-year-old): Sometimes we have to! I fight with everyone, except for Nino!
- Wow, what a hooligan!
Mariam: I am a helper too! And Nino, and Tamara, and Shorena. Mommy does not have a washing machine, but we have to do laundry every day. Mom soaks clothes and linen with water to stand a little, and then you need to press, then wrinkle... Then wring out. But I can't do it! Shorena and Tamara do that. When mommy comes back, she says: “My sweethearts, my joy!”
“Look how beautifully we do everything. We are good children”
Nino: Can you bring a washing machine to my mom?
Temuri (4-year-old): And bring a car with a remote control to me.
“I want to hold a car with a remote control in my hands so much that sometimes even tears come from my eyes.”
Teona: Guys, stop bothering aunty! Let us talk!
- Oh, Teona, let them talk! Sometimes you hear such revelations from children that we, adults, do not even pay attention to.
Teona: Yes, my kids are having a hard time. They have no one apart from each other.
“Don't think we're always fighting. We really love each other.
Tamara (10-year-old): Why not? Do you know how many friends we have? We can be friends. The problem is that our friends lend us their toys and we have nothing to lend them. It is unfair.
- What toys would you like to have?
Mariam: I want bricks. I will play with Nino. And won't lend them to anyone else.
Temuri: I want a police car with a remote, so that it makes sound “pio-pao”. And I also want cookies.
“When I grow up, I’ll be an airplane woman”
Meri (8-year-old): I want to be a woman who works at an airplane. They are beautiful. Where should I study to become such a woman? Do you know?
- I think, you must study well.
Meri: I love doing that. Well, to be honest, I don’t love it that much, but I know that I have to. Shorena urges me, she says: “Learn, learn” She wants to become a teacher and trains on me.
Tamara: I know for sure that I’ll become a doctor. There should be someone who will treat us, right? Look how many we are! And I will save other people from different sores.
“I will treat and save all the people”
“I will always help my mom”
Shorena: She’s right! I want to become a teacher that teaches Math, Georgian, Dances and Sports! They are the coolest!
- Wow! So many plans!
Nino: I want to become a washing machine to help my mom. (Giggles.) And I want a TV with cartoons for me. I also want red sneakers and a beautiful dress. And cookies, and sweets. And also bricks.
Mariam: I already said about bricks! Why do we need so many bricks?
Nino: Well, then I want a doll instead of bricks.
- Teona, please tell us too what are you dreaming about?
Teona: My only dream is for my children not to go hungry. We need everything! Look around at the situation here. It’s scary even to live here. We have no glass in the windows, we can’t close doors, the roof is leaking, and the beds are falling apart. We don’t have a fridge, but probably we don’t need it. We have nothing to put into it.
Everything here is broken
All windows are covered with cellophane
The entire family manages to fit on these broken-down beds
- I think that after the publication of the post, many kind people will learn about you, and you certainly won’t have any problems with the groceries.
Teona: Oh, how I want to believe that it was so! However, I know they will help us. I will also share my fears with you. I am afraid that my children will blame me that I gave birth to so many children. Sometimes it hurts so much to hear such words. My conscience is clear before the Lord! I have not refused any of His gifts. Look at them! Are not they wonderful?
These eyes can talk without words. Feel it with your heart...
-  They are so sweet! I think that with our joint efforts we will manage to overcome all the difficulties.
Teona: I know that it’s impossible to solve all our problems, but even a small support will be a salvation for us!
Nino: Yes! Save me and my sisters! We are good girls. And we all need tablets and phones. Because when mom and dad got to work together, we can’t call them and tell them that we are doing well.
We must save these children. The faster - the better.
- What do you think is “doing well”?
Nino: Doing well is to be like other children - when there is a beautiful house, a washing machine, and a TV. When a rat does not peep from a window and when your bed does not shake.
***
What do you think is “doing well”? When do you feel good? Can you live in peace when children are starving nearby, and mom and dad cannot feed them? You will ask, why did they give birth to them, if there are no means to provide them? Do you have a right to judge? Or you have no sins and can throw a stone at these children? These children are the future of Georgia. It is they who will create the world where our children will live too. So, let's do it together for our children and for other people's children!
