Mommy, don’t die! SOS! When the clock starts ticking down the minutes for healing from that cursed cancer!

calendar May 15, 2024

What a dreadful word “cancer” is! It sounds like death if there’s no money and no one to expect help from! In the house where we were filming the report, nobody is smiling. A silent cry for help lurks in the dark corners of the rooms! Everyone is waiting for a breakthrough and is starting to lose faith that help will come!
“Look at what the illness has turned me into! And the pain I’m experiencing is unbearable,” the unfortunate mother Salome, tells me quietly, barely holding back tears from pain, almost whispering so the children wouldn’t hear. And then, as if justifying herself, she shows me a time-worn photo where she is happy with her eldest son, Anri, and husband.

“Once upon a time, I was beautiful, cheerful, and full of strength…  And now look at what the illness has turned me into.”

Salome: “My children – Anastasia and Anri. They are so good! They have such kind hearts. I wouldn’t have survived a minute without them! Today, I can’t even get out of bed on my own. Because of the medications that are stopping the progression of cancer and immediate death I’ve gained 180 kg!”

“Mom thinks we don’t see her crying.”

– Salome, please, don’t cry. I understand how hard it is for you to talk about your illness.

Salome: My tears haven’t dried for a year now since they gave me this horrible diagnosis – cancer. I try to hide the tears, but is it even possible when the pain becomes incompatible with life?

– How did this happen? Can you remember everything chronologically?

Salome: I was healthy, nothing ever bothered me. My husband worked, I took care of the family, and the children excelled in school. And then two years ago, I twisted my foot. I thought I slipped on a wet floor. I had to have surgery. They put in a plate. I lived with it for a year. And then, when the bones healed, they removed the plate. I was so happy, I thought I’d start flying… But it wasn’t so. After some time, I collapsed again. And then again. I kept thinking: how clumsy I’ve become, stumbling at home, falling on flat ground. I couldn’t even imagine it was something serious.

– And how did you know you had cancer?

Salome: One year ago, I fell on my knees and injured my kneecap. It hurt like hell. Here, in Zugdidi, they told me I needed urgently to go to Tbilisi. There they did some tests and medical examinations and it turned out that I had some formation on the bone. And the next day in the hospital I heard this terrible word “cancer”!

– So, all those falls were because of cancer?

Salome: Yes! The tumor sits on the bone and destroys the bone. It shuts down the muscles, and that’s why I fell so often. Recently, I’ve reached a point where I can’t even walk anymore!

Now my poor kids take turns going to school every other day, even though they’re top students, and they handle all the house chores! It’s a reward from God!

– Is there a chance of recovery?

Salome: The doctors say they can heal me! But I need to undergo a stomach resection to shed at least 60 kilograms. But that’s a money matter too, and the state doesn’t cover such kind of surgery!

– Yes, you’re right. Look what our Fund’s doctors found on the Internet – the incredible transformations this surgery can bring (with before and after photos).

– Don’t cry, our management has decided to go ahead with the resection for you! What then?  The cancer will be treated!

Salome: The doctors almost guarantee it! I just need to lose weight! But you need money for everything. And in our family, only my husband, as a military man, receives a small salary. My God, my God, how much he’s been tormented by my illness! A real man! He didn’t leave me in my hour of need!

– What do you want to say as your farewell, Salome?

Salome: Help me, help me, kind people, so my children won’t be left orphans! I’ll pray for all of you and try not to cry! I’ll endure everything. Just so my children won’t become orphans! I love them very much.

-How many kilograms do you need to lose for the doctors to approve the leg surgery?

Salome: At least 60 kilograms. It’s impossible without a stomach resection. I have to undergo stomach surgery, and after six months, when I’ve shed all the excess weight, they can remove the tumor. Every day is precious to me! Cancer is destroying my bone. After a while, there won’t be any point anymore… I’ll just have to wait for death… But this surgery isn’t funded by the government. They fully funded the leg surgery, but not the stomach resection. We can’t get a loan from the bank. We already have debts that we’ll have to pay off for years. My husband is in the military, and it’s impossible to cover both the loan and the costs of medicines and groceries with his salary.  And setting aside 9,000 laris for the surgery is pure fantasy.

“I don’t want my children to become orphans.”

– It must be terrible to wake up every morning knowing that you can’t even get up from the couch without someone’s help, right?

Salome: I want to be a support for my children, but sometimes I feel like I’m not a mother at all, but a burden. I never thought I would become so helpless! Because of me, the children take turns going to school. Sometimes it’s Anastasia who stays by my side, sometimes Anri. What have they done to deserve this? They don’t even go out to play or have fun with other kids. They have neither the energy nor the mood. They sit beside me and ask how I am, what hurts… If I want to drink or go to the bathroom… What’s it like to feel like a burden to your children, when they should be taken care of, instead of having to look after you?

“I can do everything: wash the dishes, clean the house, and cook lunch if we have groceries.”

Anastasia (10-year-old): Oh, Mom, stop it! We’re grown-ups now, and all kids are supposed to take care of their moms. Didn’t you take care of us when we were born?

– You reason like an adult! But you know, sometimes even adults don’t grasp the truth you just said. There are people who abandon their parents and leave.

Anastasia: I don’t believe it! People don’t just abandon their moms. If you abandon your mom, how could you go on living? Look, I’ve learned to cook lunch and clean the house. I still can’t knead dough for bread. I bring the bowl of flour to mom and do everything beside her while she guides me.

– What do you dream about?

Anastasia: I dream for Mom to be healthy. To stop crying… To have everything healed…

‘I don’t believe there are people who cannot love their moms and leave them when they’re feeling bad.’

– And what do you want for yourself? Maybe some toys or a bicycle?

Anastasia: That’s right! No way! What are you talking about? I’m too grown-up for toys. But I wouldn’t mind having a phone or a tablet. But I don’t know how realistic that dream is. Once I become a soldier like Dad, then I’ll buy myself a phone.

– Anastasia, let me ask you some adult questions. What do you feel when you see Mom crying?

Anastasia: Even though Mom says she’s not crying, I know she is. It’s impossible to endure the pain she’s going through… I miss the ‘old Mom,’ our fun walks in the park, and our evening talks before bedtime. Everything seems so dull and sad now…

– What words of support and love do you want to say to your mom right now?

Anastasia: Mama! I love you! I know you’ll soon be back to yourself.  I know we’ll still do everything together. And I dream that I could lie in my room and call out to you: ‘Mom, bring me some compote.’ And you’d bring me the most delicious one, just like only you can make!

‘We take turns going to school, so Mom won’t be left alone.'”

– I understand now what gives you strength and how you’re holding on the edge, knowing that without surgeries, you could lose not only hope but also your life.

Salome: My strength lies in my children.  I cling to them like to the last thread of hope. And I’m ready to do anything just to see them happy.

REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS FIND THE WAY TO GOD!

Sometimes fate writes stories that seem too heavy to be real. Stories where every morning is a struggle, and every sigh is a reminder of how fragile life is. In such moments, simple dreams of happiness seem so distant that it’s hard to believe in them.

The story of Salome and her children is not just a tale of pain and suffering, but also a reminder of the importance of not losing faith in the future, even when it seems hopeless.

Salome and her family need your help. Surgery is their chance for a new life, for a return to happiness and joy. The surgery requires GEL 9000, which the family cannot raise.  Let’s support them together in this challenging situation. Every contribution brings us closer to the goal – to saving lives and bringing smiles back to Salome and her children’s faces. Let’s do this together!

If you are willing to visit the family and help them in person, here is their address: Zugdidi, 10 Badri Bernadze, apartment 8.

Every time you can help someone, just do it, and rejoice that God answers someone’s prayers through you!
