Thirty-eight-year-old Anna walks with her son every day and evening in that same rusted wheelchair – with no back support. Her heart breaks knowing she can’t afford a proper wheelchair. Her husband left seven years ago and has never once asked about his son’s condition.
Anna, 38 (Mate’s mom): Our only income is 200 lari of social allowance and 425 lari of Mate’s disability pension. What should I spend it on – food, diapers, medicine, or rehabilitation?” I can’t even afford buying a decent wheelchair with back support for my son.
Mate can barely move by this rusty and falling apart wheelchair… How can the local authorities watch this child suffer and do nothing? Why did they take those jobs – just to collect a paycheck?

0901200270Meet two true heroes of Georgia:
Anna, a mother who gave up her beauty, youth, and happiness for the sake of her family, staying faithful to her husband – until he left her after realizing just how boundless her love was for their completely paralyzed son, Mate.
And Mate himself – who cannot talk and has only just learned to plead for help with his eyes.
God help us… Every single day of Mate’s life begins and ends in a rusted wheelchair without even a backrest. Can you imagine the pain he endures? No one should suffer like this.

These are our real-life heroes. No writer on Earth could fully capture the suffering this family has endured.
A birth injury changed the fate of the Gabisonia family forever.
Mate sustained brain damage during birth, leaving his limbs paralyzed.
This photo was taken 21 years ago. That was the beginning of a lifelong ordeal.
From that moment on, Mate has been paralyzed.
As he grew, so did his pain – until it became unbearable. He can’t talk. He can’t eat himself. He hasn’t been able to get out of that broken wheelchair, not even for a second, for 21 years.
He doesn’t have flat feet.
His mother puts on his socks, changes his diapers, and when she bathes him both suffer through the ordeal.
Look at Mate’s hands. Both are deformed. He can’t move his fingers or feel anything in them. He can’t even hold a cup to drink water.
“I wouldn’t wish this pain on any mother in the world!”

Look at his legs – they’ve turned into skin and bone.
His feet are deformed. There is no sensation in them, and Mate cannot unclench his toes
He suffers from seizures.
Mate urgently needs a proper wheelchair and rehabilitation. Otherwise, this child – whose mother has given 21 of the best years of her life to caring for him and was abandoned by her husband because of it – might not survive.
We want to ask that this current wheelchair be saved for a museum – as a symbol of how the local authorities have neglected the people they’re supposed to serve. It looks like it came from a war zone. Where else could anyone find such a piece of junk?
If you are willing to visit the family and help them in person, here is their address: Zugdidi, Didi Nedis Kakhati, Kazbegi str.
Every time you can help someone, just do it, and rejoice that the Lord has turned your heart toward someone else’s sorrow. That He is answering their prayers through you. That means you are chosen. May you always be blessed. And please—keep remembering those who suffer. Go visit them. That’s where you’ll discover your true worth – as a true Georgian, a great human being, just as the Lord created us to be.
