Every moment, this poor woman hears nothing but terrifying, unbearable noise and suffers excruciating pain! “Son, my dear son, I beg you, help me…” – these were the first words of a frail elderly woman, bedridden and left deaf because of sepsis.

“It’s so loud… it hurts so much… please, help me, I beg you!” – cries 73-year-old Elene Kipiani. She presses her hands to her head, screams, weeps – but the noise never stops. That endless sound, heard only by her, has become her prison and her torment.  She has lived like this for two years.

She cannot hear my questions, so I had to communicate with her using a special board.

I would write the questions in silence, and she would scream the answers at the top of her lungs – because in her head there is nothing but unbearable noise.
“It’s so loud… it hurts so much… please, help me, I beg you! I only want one thing,” sobs Elene, “for this sound to disappear… even for just one day… please!”

The diagnosis: Tinnitus. Every second of her life, Elene, now 73, hears a piercing roar. It is painful, it drives her to tears and despair.

And yet – who are we to decide how long someone may live?  Every moment of human life belongs only to Him, our Lord, who loves each one of us. And those who endure such suffering deserve many more years, because what Elene goes through now is something you would not wish even on your worst enemy.

Once, Elene was the strong mother who held her entire family together.  Now, she is a first-degree invalid.  On top of tinnitus, she has diabetes, kidney failure, and must undergo exhausting dialysis three times a week.

In the small two-room dormitory where the Guliatashvili family lives, each member of the family has their own heavy hardship to bear.

This entire family is weighed down by suffering. Finally, we heard some good news: the Ministry of Health is planning to help, but of course that support cannot possibly cover all their needs. The unfortunate woman’s husband, 73-year-old Nodar, suffers from asthma and heart disease. Yet he doesn’t buy medicine for himself – he saves every penny for his beloved wife’s doctors.

Their son Koba has been disabled since birth, with cerebral palsy and brain damage. His mother used to care for him, but after her cruel illness the responsibility for both her and Koba fell entirely on the shoulders of Misha, Elena’s younger son. He is the only one in the family who still has the strength to fight for his mother’s recovery.

“I worked as a guard, and whenever I had a salary, somehow I managed to provide a little. But I had to leave my job – because my mother is in this condition. I can’t leave her alone… Once she cared for us, and now… now I care for both of them.”

“I found out that in Turkey doctors can do the necessary tests for my mother and plan surgery. Sadly, in Georgia there is no specialist who can perform such an operation if it becomes necessary.  I pray to God we will be able to take her there, to save her from this hell. You cannot imagine how painful it is to see her like this, to hear her desperate screams… words cannot describe it.”

Doctors gave Misha hope: there is still a chance – a chance that this cruel noise in Elene’s head might finally stop.

But the family lives in extreme poverty.  Their only income is a pension and social allowance. The state covers her dialysis, but tinnitus cannot be treated in Georgia.

Elene’s doctor prescribed sleeping pills that help her fall asleep at night – but her sleep is never peaceful or long. Because of her hearing loss, she loses balance, suffers dizziness, and it is extremely hard for her to move around on her own.

The only thing her family can do is hold her hand when she breaks down in hysterics from that monstrous sound. But they are powerless.

No one could endure such noise, such suffering. Dear friends, we must help Elene.
