Grandma Maria (76-year-old): “The doctors gave me seven years to live, and that time ran out this March. I’m SO scared—SO TERRIFIED! And I have no money to see a doctor or buy medicine!”

This poor elderly woman cannot even afford calming pills that cost just four lari, though without them the fear of death won’t let her sleep.

In 1992, her beloved husband died of sarcoma. They never managed to have children. Every coin from their house was spent on his treatment. Now her pension barely covers the rent. Maria loved her husband so deeply that she never even thought about marrying again, though having children was her most cherished dream. Who knows – maybe that was her mistake? Who knows – maybe in our world, “crime” means true loyalty and sincere love? Who knows – maybe the women who are happy today are the ones who, unlike Maria, could not afford loyalty and strong love?

Her tiny room is unbearably poor.

When I arrived, Maria’s kind neighbor had brought her a bowl of soup with meat. Seeing it, Maria burst into tears of joy. Thank you, dear neighbor, from all of us at the Fund!

Grandma Maria graduated from medical university. She worked for 25 years in the rector’s office, as secretary to the rector and the Party Committee. She even personally knew the famous Georgian actress Sofiko Chiaureli. Who could have imagined her old age would turn out so humiliating? But the Lord goes mysterious ways… Where are her old friends and colleagues now? Do they even remember her?

Grandma Maria: “My dear, do you see what I sleep on? The bed is falling apart, the mattress is old, the blanket too. I have to throw away my bed linen because there’s no one to wash it. I just don’t have the strength to do laundry by hand. I have no washing machine, no refrigerator. It’s torture. If only you knew, my dear, how much I suffer – you’d go mad.”

Grandma Maria: “I have to use a chamber pot, because I cannot go to the outdoor toilet, because it’s not a proper toilet.”

With hope in her voice, Grandma Maria turns to all of you, her “grandchildren”: “Help me in any way you can. Show kindness, my dear Georgians, my good people! You are my only hope. And I’ll sing you one last song: ‘The swallows will return again, but we will never return…’”

Friends, Grandma Maria urgently needs a cardiologist’s consultation and medication. We also want to buy her a bed, a refrigerator, and a washing machine. These simple things would ease her suffering. None of us knows what kind of old age awaits us. Nor do we know if those we once loved will still be by our side. But right now, Grandma Maria needs us. She is waiting desperately for our help…
