As long as there’s life, there’s hope. For many years, 88-year-old Grandpa Ovsep has been gazing down the road from the window of his nursing home – waiting, hoping, dreaming. His heart skips a beat every time he sees people in the distance who, for a brief moment, might seem like his children. He still believes they haven’t forgotten him. It even feels as if he’s holding on – refusing to leave this world – just to have a chance to say goodbye to those he once loved more than life itself. This remarkable man has only one dream left: to see – and carry with him to his final resting place – the warmth of the hearts for whom he was once ready to give his own life. How heartbreaking… The road remains empty – day after day, year after year.

Look into his eyes – that gaze belongs only to the abandoned elderly.
Ovsep is alone. Almost deaf and in poor health. He miraculously survived when a snowstorm destroyed his house – trapped under the ruins for three long days, between life and death.
In the winter of 2025, his home collapsed under the weight of heavy snow. For three days he lay buried in the wreckage – without food, without help, without even the strength to call for help.
The heavy snow that hit Georgia in 2024 and destroyed many homes.
Grandpa heard the walls collapsing, the roof caving in, and the silence growing louder than the pain…
His wife had passed away earlier. The horror of that time is impossible to describe: her body remained in the house because he couldn’t afford a funeral. It was only later that neighbors helped.
His children are somewhere far away – in Siberia. They stopped calling long ago. In a way, they buried him alive. But Ovsep doesn’t think so. He keeps finding excuses for them. “They’re good kids,” he says softly. He refuses to believe that, for them, he no longer exists.
And yet, in a sense, Ovsep is lucky – his nursing home is on the outskirts of Tbilisi. Thousands of others like him die almost under open sky, forgotten and alone.
This is the place where the forgotten wait for a miracle – for a bit of human warmth. Our warmth, friends. Everyone else has already forgotten them.
His name is Ovsep Krungiani. He’s 88 years old. He can barely hear, speaks quietly, and struggles to breathe. He has just one tooth left.
In July 2025, doctors found a tumor in his lungs. The coughing, the blood, the pain… Each month, they take him to the hospital just to prolong his life – but the doctors no longer speak of recovery.
Grandpa Ovsep said to me: “My dear child, I have almost nothing left… But I’d love to hear the world once more, to taste food again before I go… I just want to live out my last days with a bit of happiness.”
He isn’t asking for much – just a hearing aid to hear the world again, and a denture so he can smile – smile at God, and at every kind person he meets. “It doesn’t feel right with one tooth,” he adds with a shy grin. “People might think I don’t respect them.”
He has no home, no belongings – nothing but memories and faith in the kindness of his people. In his youth, respect for elders was sacred.
Sometimes, memories of those years make him happy; other times, they bring tears that flow like rivers.
When he can no longer face the harsh reality, he closes his eyes and whispers to himself: “Why? Why did everyone leave me?” He still has no answer. Or maybe he does – and just keeps it to himself.
Is old age in Georgia a fight for survival?
According to Georgia’s National Statistics Office and the UN, over 20% of the population is over 60. By 2030, the number of elderly will rise sharply.
But most of them live in poverty – a pension of 295–450 lari can’t cover medicine, food, or rent.
“Old age is hard, especially when you’re alone. I wish I could hear children’s laughter once more – just once…” – says Ovsep, searching the room with his eyes for warmth and attention.
Many old people are lonely. Their children have left; their neighbors have forgotten them. There are hundreds like Ovsep in nursing homes – once strong, hardworking, proud people, now dependent on the kindness of strangers.
The philosopher Seneca once wrote: Old age is no misfortune if you are not alone. But loneliness turns it into torment. Dear reader, do you agree?
When Ovsep lies on his bed, his eyes remain open. They still reflect the light, but there is no longer the gaze. He’s alive – not because life is easy, but because he refuses to give up. He has survived the death of his beloved wife, the collapse of his home, illness, and the cold – and yet he still thanks fate for the life he has.
“I know my time is short… But if I could hear the world once more, one more sound, one more voice – I’d be happy,” – he whispers faintly.
We have no right to forget our elders. We cannot allow people like him to die in silence. When an old person dies, an entire era disappears – a whole world of stories, of mad love and bitter betrayal,
a whole life…
There’s no greater cruelty or betrayal than when your own children – those for whom you lived and would have died – forget you, burying you alive in loneliness. God, what terrible times we’re living in…
Friends, let’s help Ovsep. Let’s help him hear again — and smile again.
