A devoted Georgian mother is raising two seriously ill children in someone else’s home. Instead of dreaming of sweets, the poor brother and sister dream of medicine. Isn’t that even more terrifying than a tragedy?

“Today he had two seizures in just half an hour. I held him in my arms as he screamed and convulsed… there was nothing I could do. He’s so sick, so weak. Why did this happen to my child?” says 47-year-old Megi Mtivlishvili, mother of 13-year-old Giorgi, who has been trapped inside his own body since birth.

Giorgi has epilepsy, autism, and cerebral palsy from his first months of life.

His condition is the result of a medical mistake – incorrect treatment led to a coma and four clinical deaths, leaving him with severe brain damage.

Because of his illness, Giorgi cannot attend school, so his devoted mother tries to teach him to write at home.

He now suffers from 4–5 seizures every day. He can barely speak, hardly walk, eats only dry food, and wears diapers. At times, his unpredictable behavior makes him a danger to himself.

Giorgi’s life is a constant battle – with his body and with the world around him. Every step, every word, every breath is an act of courage.
 And every fall is a catastrophe that his mother endures with unbearable pain in her heart.

Her older daughter, Nino (21), is also ill – she has underdeveloped hip joints and suffers from severe pain when walking. Joint replacement surgery will only help in a few years. Until then, Nino requires constant care.

The family lives in a tiny apartment in Tbilisi, temporarily provided by a relative who is currently abroad. Their home appliances are barely working: the fridge is broken, the stove barely lights, and they don’t even have a TV. Their income is almost nothing – 200 GEL in social allowance and Giorgi’s 425 GEL disability pension. They often have to eat at a social canteen.

Megi herself is sick too – she has diabetes, varicose veins, and epilepsy. Her parents are also gravely ill. She is the children’s only protector – the only light in their world of pain. Her husband suddenly passed away from a heart attack a few years ago, and since then, Megi has been struggling alone to cope with this difficult and impoverished life. Every day she fights – sometimes silently, sometimes through tears – to make sure Giorgi is not left alone with his suffering.

“Every day I think about what will happen to my children when I’m gone. These thoughts are destroying me, but I try not to show it – I do everything I can for them. They are my whole life. Please, I beg you, help my Gio feel better,” says Megi, holding back her tears.

This family desperately needs our help. Even the smallest support can change Giorgi’s daily life – bring him hope, a little peace, and a sense of safety. He needs medical tests and new medication, but the family simply cannot afford them.

Every breath Giorgi takes is a struggle, every minute a miracle. Only together can we give this child a chance for a brighter, safer tomorrow.
