“God, why must I, still alive, suffer the same torments as the wicked and the betrayers of Christ endure in hell?..” And indeed, everything I, a correspondent of the Chernovetskyi Fund, witnessed when I visited the devout and dignified woman Darejan felt like a glimpse of hell itself…
REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO GOD!

For the first time in my life, I met a person of whom only half remained. This was not a scene from a horror film or a fantasy movie.
Darejan’s left leg had been completely amputated. It all began a few years ago when her toes started to “burn away.” She didn’t have the money to buy the ointments the doctor prescribed, and her condition quickly worsened. She developed gangrene, And you can see the tragic result.
Now, on her right leg, only half a foot and two toes are left. The wound is festering; sepsis has begun. To stop the infection, she urgently needs medical treatment. But for this poor woman, such care is nothing more than a distant dream. Without immediate medical help, she risks losing her other leg too. This is not just suffering – it’s something far worse than hell.
Dear readers, prepare yourselves, because what follows is even harder to bear. Darejan’s story is not for the faint of heart.

She has only two fingers on her right hand and one on her left. There are no words strong enough to describe what she has endured.
Darejan (59): “Sometimes I think even death would be kinder than this life. God knows, I say that from the bottom of my heart, my child.”
— You mentioned God. That means you believe in Him. Have you lost faith in Him?

Darejan: “My heart is full of love for the Lord, but I have never received an answer to my question: ‘Why must I suffer in life the same way that evil people suffer in hell? I’ve never done harm to anyone. Why am I being punished?’”
A deathly silence filled the room. Although her question was addressed to God, I could clearly see in Darejan’s eyes a silent plea, as if she hoped that maybe I – at least – knew the answer.
Darejan: “All my troubles began in 2017, when I became dependent on dialysis. I have a severe form of diabetes. This disease kills a person slowly and painfully.”
Darejan: “Every day I inject myself with these cursed insulin shots using a hand that has only two fingers left. Ah… even death would be better than this kind of torment. I can’t bear it any longer…”
The poor woman lives in utter poverty. That gas cylinder, which could explode at any moment, is her only source of warmth in the winter cold.

Darejan has undergone eight surgeries. Now, her dialysis machine must be replaced. But her veins are so damaged that, according to the doctors, the chances of reconnecting her to a new machine are almost nonexistent – less than one percent. And life without dialysis is essentially a death sentence. A slow and agonizing death.
Look into her kind eyes. Her eyes are windows to her soul. Could such a devout, gentle woman truly deserve so much suffering?
This photo was taken 35 years ago – Darejan and her beloved husband.
It captures a time when she was on cloud nine, radiant with happiness.
Darejan: “I feel so embarrassed to ask strangers for help. I’m so ashamed I wish the ground would swallow me up. I’m not asking for a prosthetic leg, or an artificial arm, or new fingers. Pious people, I beg you for only one thing:
either help me survive, or shoot me dead, so I can finally be free from this unbearable pain…”
— Please, don’t talk about death. For 13 years, our Fund’s friends have been fighting to give people a chance at life. Tell us, what do you need to live?
Darejan: I need surgery. I need surgery to place an artificial fistula – a vein connection for the dialysis machine. It’s the only and the last way to simply… live. To simply breathe… and postpone, even for a few years, my ‘visit’ to that cold, dark grave from which no one ever returns…”
If you are willing to visit Darejan and help her in person, here is her address: Zugdidi, 7 Baramia Street, block 5.
