We are so, so cold! “Mom… Mommy! The Chernovetskyi Fund is here!” A cry of hope rang out from a dilapidated house where five children know the bite of freezing cold better than any adult ever should. And today their joy has no limits: this winter, they won’t freeze. Their mother told them that the Fund’s friends love God and care about children from poor families living in ruined homes.
REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO GOD!
“Mom… Mommy. The Chernovetskyi Fund is here!” A little girl shouted with happiness and ran toward home.
I followed her with my eyes and saw a tiny, collapsing structure – looking more like a storage shed than a house.
God… what poverty this family lives in. No words, no heart can fully capture such a sight.
The Gureshidze family has five children and a single mother, Kristine, who suffers from severe, frequent epileptic seizures. Within these bare walls, in conditions no family should endure, they wait for winter. And they don’t even know how they will survive it if the cold turns harsh.
When a seizure stops, turn the patient on their side. This will keep them from choking if they vomit afterward.
We found these photos in a medical guide that explains in detail how to save a person from dying during a seizure. Otherwise… death is very close! And who will save this poor woman?!
Five-year-old Dunia didn’t rush to show us toys when she saw a journalist from the Fund. She brought out her kitten – her only friend.
— Dunia, will you show us your favorite toy?
Dunia: I have only one doll. But the kitten… he’s my friend.
Little Dunia cannot attend kindergarten – she has no warm clothes, no winter shoes.
When I, a correspondent of the Fund, first saw eight-year-old Saba’s eyes, I felt overwhelmed with guilt…
In a country dedicated to the Mother of God, little angels carry deep pain in their hearts. When and how did we, as a society, let such injustice happen? Holy Mother Mary, forgive us!
Saba already knows what poverty is. He knows he isn’t allowed to dream of “extra things,” because dreams simply don’t come true. From childhood, children in Georgia are made to feel they belong to a lower caste – that they are nobodies in their own homeland!
Kristine, their mother, says softly: “Every day I pray: Lord, give me strength so my children can be happy… So they can at least have the basics… I beg You, Lord…”
Kristine is 38. She grew up in an orphanage – a place where everything is strange and unfamiliar, where no mother kisses her child goodnight or tells bedtime stories.
Perhaps that is where the epilepsy began… the disease that one day may take the life of a mother of five!
– Kristine, have you forgiven your parents for leaving you in the orphanage?
Kristine lowers her eyes, pauses for a long moment. “I don’t know… I guess I forgave them, because I go to their graves and wait for a miracle – that my mother will suddenly answer me from heaven and say: ‘I loved you, my dear Kristina! It just happened this way…’ I don’t bring store-bought flowers – I pick whatever I find in the yard. I sit beside them and say, ‘Mama…’ I just want to hear an answer at least once in my life.”
– And the politicians you voted for? Did you ever ask them for help? They must have promised you something during the elections?
Kristine doesn’t understand my question. For her, the idea that someone in the state should care for her and her children seems strange. She simply loves her country, without expecting anything in return.
Her husband left her – left a woman who collapses during epileptic seizures with foam on her lips. She doesn’t curse him. But he offers her no help at all. Everything falls on this fragile woman’s shoulders — caring, fighting, surviving. But her kind heart somehow endures it all.
Besides Dunia and Saba, Kristine has three more sons. Giorgi is 15, Vano is 14, and Levan is 12. When representatives of the Chernovetskyi Fund arrived at the Gureshidze home, the older children were in the forest gathering mushrooms and firewood.
Lord, keep them safe and bring them home unharmed.
When you walk out of their house, the air feels heavier.
The cold surrounds you, carrying the smell of smoke and the weight of sadness. But inside there is light – not from a lamp, but from the enormous loving heart of a mother who keeps believing despite everything.
The children are growing up in poverty, but goodness still lives in their home. When Kristine says “thank you,” she looks straight into your eyes — and in that one word there is more sincerity than in all our everyday comforts.
Look into their eyes, and you will understand instantly: poverty has stolen childhood from these angels. They are beginning to realize that they are “the wrong kind,” that rich children have everything, while they have no rights at all! Their homeland does not need them; and if tomorrow they disappear, no one will even remember them! IT IS TERRIBLE! Frozen with cold, the children cannot drink hot tea or eat warm soup – their home has neither an electric stove nor a gas one.
How do we restore these little ones’ sense of dignity? Lord, Lord… how can anyone steal the future of such children?!
Today – no, right now – we must prove to these good people, to these children, that we respect them, that they are loved, and that they matter far more than those who made their lives so miserable.
Friends, we are asking not only for material help for this family – we are asking you to open your heart to the struggles of these simple Georgian people, who still believe in miracles: Kristine and her children. May this coming winter bring them not cold and fear, but our sincere love and support! We are not officials. We are humans.
