The crash came out of nowhere – and suddenly 25-year-old Lasha was face to face with death. Blinding headlights, a blow of terrifying force, the crack and grind of metal… And then – silence. A silence in which he suddenly realized he could no longer feel the lower half of his body.

Today, when hadsome Georgian man Lasha looks back on the joyful life he once had, only one moment stands out – the moment it all ended. “I’m lying there… I try to lift my legs – they won’t obey me. And then, like a lightning bolt, it hits me – the full horror of what has happened. This is it. All the joys of life are over.”

Later, the police would officially confirm it: Lasha was not at fault. That night he was simply driving for work – sober, focused, responsible.

How could such a thing happen? Lasha knew every turn in his neighborhood, every pothole, every object on the road that could interfere with driving. But that fatal accident turned his entire life upside down. And yet, thank God, today we have the chance to bring this young man back to life. Thank God!

Lasha lay motionless as strangers hovered over him… Then he remembers only the glare of the operating room lamp and a terrifying verdict: his spine was damaged, a nerve was affected.

He underwent two surgeries, receiving metal implants that now hold his back together. When he first tried to move his leg – he felt nothing. When he tried again hour later — nothing happened again. The next day – the same despair. He stared at his own legs as if they belonged to someone else.

Then began the long weeks in the hospital: icy morning bandage changes, sleepless nights, screams from nerves refusing to wake up… But there were tiny victories too: the first weak reflex, the first faint twitch of a muscle. For someone else, it might be nothing – but for Lasha, it was as if someone turned the light back on. But the path is so long. And so expensive.

The young man lost not only his health – he lost love. When people speak about the greatest pain, they rarely mean the physical one. Lasha truly loved one girl:  quietly, deeply. She stayed by his side while he lay unable to move. His beloved…

But when you love deeply, you are always ready to sacrifice yourself for the one you love. He was ready – but not for this. One day he found the strength to say the most painful words of his life: “Go, and try to forget me, my love. You must live. I don’t want you to see me as a helpless cripple even for a second. Just promise you’ll remember me as I was – and how I loved you!!!”

And then he added: “You must live. But I don’t know whether I’ll ever walk again…” He thought he was saving her. In reality, those words were burying him. Because we are not animals! And when you abandon the one who cannot live without your love and help, you challenge the One who gave you a soul!

Remember, friends: only God judges our actions. And that is why we at the Fund never judge the pain of others.

His mother never had to say such heavy words. She is in Italy — working to keep her son and buy his medication. At night she cleans homes, and during the day she cares for the elderly.

Lasha’s father, Badri, has diabetes. He is 52. He tries to stay strong so his son won’t see him losing the last of his strength. A brave man – like so many Georgian men! How painful it is: God gave Georgia such strong men – and yet they live in such humiliating poverty.

But the most incredible thing, friends, is that God has given us a chance to help Lasha stand on his feet again!

After months of treatment in Georgia – months of pain, tears, and exhausting rehabilitation – doctors now say: Lasha can walk again. But only if he undergoes an intensive rehabilitation course in Turkey. All necessary tests have already been completed. The family has done everything they possibly could.

Now everything depends on us. We need $7,000 so Lasha can undergo a month-long rehabilitation program in Turkey – a program that can help him stand on his own two feet.

Lasha was an ordinary young man, working honestly. Now his only dream is to take one step again. A step toward life. A step toward the future. A step he fears — but waits for with all his heart.

He has already lost too much. We can help him regain the one thing that can change everything – the ability to walk. And show God the depth of our compassion and our souls.
