A terrible tragedy has struck a once-happy Georgian family. Two-year-old Giorgi writhes in pain. Eight-year-old Barbare looks up with pleading eyes, silently asking for help. Five-year-old Nikoloz is soaked at night by the rain that pours straight into their home. And ten-year-old Anastasia endures a daily hell of constant headaches. Their poor mother, who worked as a street sweeper to feed her children, has suffered a stroke… My God – it feels as though the Karchava family has been cursed.

When I, a correspondent for the Chernovetskyi Fund, traveled from Tbilisi to Chiatura and entered the Karchava home, a horrifying scene unfolded before my eyes. The pain and hopelessness in the eyes of four little angels was so overwhelming that for a moment I wondered – am I hallucinating?

Look at her – she truly has the face of an angel.

Eight-year-old Barbare was doing everything she could to make sure the “strange lady” didn’t notice the tears gathering in her eyes. The look on her face left me speechless… as if the blood froze in my veins. I wanted to ask what was troubling her, but I was afraid…Yes – I was afraid to face the reality staring back at me. And I felt ashamed that in a country dedicated to the Mother of God, a child’s eyes reflect not stars, but despair.

And this little angel hasn’t even turned two. The poor boy is tormented by severe digestive problems.

He curls up… unable to tolerate the pain anymore.

And this is ten-year-old Anastasia. Every morning begins with unbearable agony. Sometimes a painkiller dulls the headache – but only for an hour. She needs a full medical examination and treatment, but because of crushing poverty, their mother can do nothing.

Maka, 42 (mother of four):

“I worked as a street sweeper. Early in the morning I went outside to clean the roads. Later I went to someone’s home to care for an elderly bedridden woman. They paid me 300 lari a month. With that money, I bought food for my children. But life stabbed me in the back. I had a stroke, and it brought many health problems with it. In the end, I lost the ability to work. 

And now… now I can only watch my children suffer, and I can’t help them. My soul aches…”

Five-year-old Nikoloz is cold – the heater broke long ago. He tries not to be afraid of the December chill, but…

One day, as he was shivering in the wind, he saw newborn kittens outside, weakened by the cold. People walked past them… but Nikoloz couldn’t leave them to die. This kind-hearted boy saved their lives.

He even shared his own bread with them — and that’s how they grew up.

My God… how much kindness can fit inside such a small heart?

There is no bathtub, no hot water… This dreadful space is their “bathroom.” A long winter lies ahead… frost… and the children will have to wash in these damp walls. Their poor mother tries not to bathe them when it rains: water pours into the “bathroom” just as it does outside.

The floor has caved in, the walls are covered with mold – poison for growing bodies. Where could their mother possibly find the money for repairs?

Kind people, you surely understand: the Karchava family’s only hope is you.

When poor Maka called the Chernovetskyi Fund, her voice trembled. She was ashamed to ask for help. But for her children, a mother will overcome anything.

And today – sick, but still heroic – she places her hope in you, kindhearted people. May the Mother of God reward your families a hundredfold for every act of kindness you show to “other people’s children” in distress.

Barbare, 8-year-old: “My classmates have already started decorating their homes for New Year. But we don’t have a tree, or lights, or ornaments. Back in summer, I dreamed that at least this year our home would feel festive… But, auntie, this year my dream didn’t come true either.”

Correspondent: “Barbare, don’t worry – there is still time before New Year.

Soon kind people will hear about your dream. Who knows – maybe this year you’ll have a magical holiday morning, just like in fairy tales.”

When the girl heard this, her eyes widened. I could feel how quickly her heart began to beat… My God, how little children need to be happy.

Correspondent: I left Chiatura with a heavy heart…

On the way back, I couldn’t get those four sorrowful, angelic faces out of my mind.

Life can be unbearably unfair… but a tiny spark of hope still burns – everywhere, in all circumstances. And that hope is you, kind people.

New Year is approaching… And tell me: how can we ask God for blessings for our own children on December 31 if we walk past “other children” who desperately needed help – and did nothing?

Look closely at these children’s eyes. They’re not asking for wealth.  Warmth, care, and love – that is all these angels need from us.
