Ten-year-old Gimik’s life is in danger. Not long ago, the boy lost his father, and now a cruel illness is threatening his life as well. The tragedy is doubled by the fact that the child who desperately needs treatment is also caring for his seriously ill mother, who is confined to bed.

Sofia, 35-year-old: “I’m in constant, unbearable pain…I fell down the stairs and broke my arm and my leg. I had surgery, and doctors implanted metal plates.”

Sofia, 35-year-old: “For more than three months now, I’ve been confined to bed. I am completely helpless. I can’t even put on my socks by myself. I don’t have money to see a doctor. I only have enough medication left for one more week.”

Just one year ago, at the peak of his life, Sofia’s husband passed away – the man she loved more than life itself, the family’s only provider. Now this grieving mother and her son survive on a child allowance of 120 lari.

Ten-year-old Gimik had to grow up far too early. He helps his mother around the house, praying for her to walk again.

Gimik, 10-year-old: “Auntie, do you know when my mommy will be able to walk again?”  he asks, and in his young eyes you can see both pain and hope.

Gimik, 10-year-old: “I want my mom and me to go for walks and play together like we used to. And I miss my daddy so much. I really miss him. When Daddy was alive, he worked and there was always food at home. Now the refrigerator is empty. ”

But the hardest thing for Sofia is not her own pain — it is the suffering of her ten-year-old son. Gimik has severe scoliosis, which is already compressing his internal organs. One shoulder has dropped seven centimeters lower than the other. If he does not have surgery now, it may soon be too late.  Every day his condition worsens, yet there is no money even for medical examinations – let alone treatment.

Sofia, 35-year-old: “My heart breaks when my boy cries out in pain…So often, we cry together.”

Sofia, 35-year-old: “After my husband died, I promised God I would be strong and live for my son. I’m terrified that I won’t be able to raise the money for his treatment. We both desperately need your help. All our hope is in kind-hearted people. We don’t even have our own home anymore – it collapsed. For now, we are staying with relatives.”

Please, take just a moment away from your own worries.
Look around. Feel with your heart how hard life is for those who are not truly living, but merely surviving.

Feel the pain of this brave mother and her little son. May your hearts be opened to mercy and compassion, and may God dwell within them. Do not walk past someone else’s suffering.

And as if that weren’t enough, he also faces a serious illness, constant pain, and deep poverty. Kind-hearted people, perhaps the most unfortunate and suffering child in Georgia today is waiting for your help.
