“Every day it becomes harder for me to breathe, and because of scoliosis I’ve had since childhood, I limp more and more.” Severely ill Magdalena, suffering from devastating scoliosis, lives in an abandoned building with nothing but bare walls around her. She has no money for doctors – and no money even for food.

Magdalena, 43: – “I have scoliosis – my spine is so badly curved that I struggle to breathe. One leg is shorter than the other, that’s why I limp badly. I can barely walk and fall all the time. I don’t have the money to see a doctor. The last time I had a medical checkup was eight years ago.”

This photograph was taken in the late 1980s. Even then, the girl already had serious problems with her spine – it’s visible in the way she stands. But Magdalena’s poor mother had no means to take her daughter for treatment or massage. Yes, it was crushing poverty that stole this angel-like girl’s childhood, her youth, and the rest of her life.

The woman under our Fund’s care has had a very hard life. At the age of ten, she was left an orphan. Her mother and father could not bear the suffering of their sick child and both died of heart attacks. After that, a neighbor arranged for her to be taken to a monastery, as she had no relatives left.
Magdalena, 43: – “The nuns cared for me as if I were their own daughter. They gave me the motherly warmth and love I was missing. Most importantly, I was with my Lord. Faith helped me survive the hardest moments of my life.”

Is it possible to truly understand her pain and helplessness? It’s impossible.

A wide, desolate plain, on the brink of becoming a desert. In summer, there is drought. In winter – bitter, unbearable cold. You see nothing here but snakes.

Just look at where Magdalena and her husband live today. It is an abandoned construction site near White Lake in Gldani.
Sergo, 41 (Magdalena’s husband): – “We moved in here nine months ago. Moved in’ is a big word – we occupied the place illegally. There were only three walls; we built the fourth ourselves. That’s how we live. When you have no roof over your head, you don’t get to choose.”

You can see the condition of this tiny room. But photographs cannot convey reality. It is damp, freezing cold, and surrounded by bare concrete. Still, there is no alternative – at least they are not living on the street. The family has no home of their own. And these two people have nowhere else to go.

They survive on disability pension and social allowance. But 300 lari a month is not enough even for food. To survive, Magdalena and her husband collect and sell scrap metal. Sergo takes on any temporary work he can find. But because of serious health problems – he has only one kidney – he is forbidden to lift heavy objects.

Magdalena, 43: – “I cook food on an old gas cylinder that gives off soot. I’m afraid that one day it might explode.”

Magdalena, 43: – “How are we supposed to live in conditions like this? Did we really deserve endless trials like these? We have no basic amenities – no bathroom, no toilet. We wash in a basin in the middle of the room, and in bad weather it’s especially hard. We bring water from our neighbors. There used to be no heating at all. Thank God for a friend who gave us a stove. Our only hope is God and kind people who read our story and choose to help.
I believe the Lord will not abandon us – He sent you to us as guardian angels.” ”

Magdalena, 43: – “We live like primitive people. We don’t have a washing machine, a refrigerator, or a television – nothing. We would be grateful for any help, even the smallest.”

Friends, you are our only hope. Let’s imagine how Magdalena’s and Sergo’s lives could change if we all came together. This family, exhausted by years of suffering, deserves not just pity – but real support. Their story is a cry for help that must be heard. Georgians have always been known for their unity. Now is the time to prove it in action. Each of us can contribute: some with building materials, some with food, and some with a kind word that inspires others to help.
