1,500 GEL between the mother’s life and her last chance for an operation to survive

On New Year’s Eve, the Fund received a phone call. A woman’s desperate voice was on the other end of the line. For poor Mariam, New Year’s morning began with a dark day.

Friends, the fact is that this single mother of two urgently needs head surgery. Furthermore, the surgery was scheduled for early January, but Mariam was 1,500 GELshort of the required amount, and as a result, the planned procedure was canceled.

Yes, that’s right: the day before the operation, when the single mother came to the clinic to get some tests, she learned that the operation had been cancelled.
“When you have the full amount, then we will do the operation” – these are the words they told her at the clinic.

Mariam’s eyes filled with tears, her throat felt like it was clogged, and she couldn’t speak. She doesn’t remember how she got home from the clinic. 

Dear caring people, the Ministry of Health’s funding deadline is expiring. This means that if we don’t raise the remaining 1,500 GEL by January 12th, the funding approval will be revoked, and the single mother will have to reapply. Who knows when she’ll receive the ministry’s approval again.

And you yourself understand perfectly well what a delayed operation means.

Friends, right now our only hope is you. 

We won’t allow the life of a lonely, heroic mother to be sacrificed for 1,500 GEL. Otherwise, our consciences will haunt us. 

She’s an honest worker: she picked persimmon in the villages and then sold it. One day, a minibus loaded with persimmon overturned on a bad road.

After the accident, the woman hit her head. At first, she thought she was okay, but then she started feeling dizzy and nauseous… Doctors discovered hematomas in her head. She required emergency surgery to remove bone fragments from her skull. 

       Journalist: – „Mariam, have you ever wondered — or been angry with God — why this happened to you?“ 

       Mariam: – „Never! On the contrary, I am grateful to God for saving me. This is my trial, which, with God’s help, I will overcome… and, I hope, with your support. I have the deepest faith in God… and I believe in you“.

Mariam is a single mother. She raised two children alone. Now they are adults and try to support their mother in everything, but you know, friends, how difficult life is today in our country, in Georgia. Mariam’s children don’t have the means to pay for their mother’s surgery. 

      Mariam: – “I live in a rented apartment. While I was working, I paid the rent with my earnings, but now I’m temporarily unable to work… Everything you see here doesn’t belong to me — it’s the landlord’s property… I don’t know what will happen if I can’t pay the rent. I don’t want to be left out in the cold,” Mariam says, barely holding back tears. 

Believe me, friends, you meet such strong women very rarely. 

She’s counting on our foundation’s friends. What’s this sum? Is human life really worth so little?

We’ve saved people before, literally snatching them from the clutches of death — and Mariam shouldn’t be an exception. We must help her undergo a second surgery so she can live a full life.
