Nino and Nodar live in a cardboard house and survive on 500 lari for two – in the middle of a harsh winter. They will not survive without our help. They sincerely believe in God – and therefore in us. Let us not allow Nino and Nodar to die. God did not give them children together – which means all of us are their children.

In this house, the cold can be heard. It isn’t just felt on the skin – it sounds. It creaks in the cardboard walls, presses against the temples, forces fingers to clench just to get a little warmer. Winter never leaves here. Because poverty has no seasons.

Nino and Nodar live here together. Elderly. Ill. Almost invisible to the world.

“At night, the scariest thing isn’t the cold…
The scariest thing is waking up and realizing there’s nothing left to turn on,” – Nino says quietly, without lifting her eyes.

There is no gas in their home. None at all. There is only one electric heater. It barely warms the room – but it consumes almost everything. Every month they pay over 200 lari for electricity. Nearly half of their entire pension.

“We count the days until the bill arrives. And then we count how many times we can eat,” she adds. Their total income is 500 lari a month.
That is everything they have to survive.

For more than twenty years, Nodar worked as a minibus driver. Every day, he held other people’s lives in his hands. A man with a rare sense of responsibility. When nerve damage caused his hands to start trembling, he left on his own.

“I couldn’t drive people if I wasn’t confident in myself.
Better to go hungry than to fail to bring someone home one day,” he says.

Before that, there was the army. Service. Duty. He always lived by his conscience.

He met Nino at church. She worked there – cleaning the floors, caring for the church, for the silence, for the candles.

“We didn’t meet by accident. I thought then — this is how it was meant to be,” – Nino recalls.

But illness came to her as well. High blood pressure, trembling hands, weakness.

“Sometimes I can’t even hold a cup. And sometimes I just sit and wait for it to pass,” she says.

In the photographs, you don’t see just a poor house.
You see a life compressed into one room, one heater, and two elderly people who still hold on to each other.

There are old photos on the table. They sort through them in silence.

“It used to be warmer. Not because we were richer… but because life was easier,” Nodar says softly.

They have no children. No one to call in the evening and ask, “Have you eaten?”
No one to bring groceries, pay the electricity bill, or simply turn on the gas and say, “Now it will be warm.” No one knocks on the door of this house. Help does not come here by itself.

They are not asking for much. They need gas so the house stops being icy. They need food so they don’t have to choose between warmth and eating.

“We don’t want luxury. We just want to survive the winter,” Nino says.
