Friends, when I entered the home of this new family in need, my heart sank. The mother was dividing the last piece of bread among her three children, and the youngest, Mate, just one and a half years old, started to cry – he was afraid there wouldn’t be enough for him.

Yesterday these children went to bed hungry. Today they may go to sleep with empty stomachs again if we don’t help.

The mother pours warm water into Mate’s bottle, trying somehow to ease his hunger.

Anna, 21, mother: “Formula costs 40 lari, and one tin only lasts two days… I simply can’t afford it.”

Nini, 3 years old: “Mommy, my tummy hurts… I want to eat…”

The children nibble on pieces of stale bread, but in their minds they imagine they are holding hot fried chicken drumsticks. This small illusion helps them swallow even a dry crust.

Four-year-old Daniel speaks with a seriousness beyond his years:
Daniel, 4: “Do you know how bad it is to be hungry? I feel most sorry for my little brother… He cries all the time because he’s hungry. And I don’t even have toys to distract him.”

Anna, the mother of these little angels, can barely hold back her tears:
Anna, 21, mother: “I’m a single mother. I’m 21 and I have three children… I was only 16 when I got married. I was still a child, yet I was already someone’s wife. But as often happens in early marriages, we separated. Now he doesn’t even care about the children – he doesn’t help, he doesn’t visit them. It breaks my heart – how can you turn away from your own children, your own flesh and blood?”

The children have colds, and little Mate is coughing so badly that he may have pneumonia. But the poor mother doesn’t even have money to take him to a doctor.

Anna, 21, mother: “I can’t work. I’m seriously ill – I have a kidney infection with pus. Recently I was in the hospital with a 40°C fever and severe pain… If something happens to me, who will take care of my children?”

Anna, 21, mother: “The worst thing is that we have no home… I couldn’t pay the rent and ended up on the street with three children. Thank God relatives took us in temporarily… I have nowhere else to go. We have no furniture, no appliances, the children don’t even have toys…”

Dear friends, no child should grow up in such hardship. When they cry from hunger and pain, it is impossible to remain indifferent. Each of us can help. Even a small amount can support this family.
