50-year-old Gocha suffers from muscular atrophy. For 30 years now, his body has not obeyed him. And for all these 30 years, he has stayed alive only because his mother – now 75 and very ill herself – is still alive.

Gocha, 50-year-old: “I can’t move my legs. I can’t lift my arms.” Today, he and his mother are like one body. They suffer and struggle together in the same poverty.

Friends, Gocha desperately needs a specialized adjustable bed with a remote control – so he can press a button to turn, raise his back, change his position, and at least ease his pain a little. His mother is no longer able even to turn him onto his side. Bedsores are slowly killing him…And his mother is being worn down by her heart condition and her age.

His mother is 75. She has heart disease. She has survived three heart attacks.  Her knees hurt, her arms and legs go numb, she struggles to breathe. She can barely walk, yet she still gets up and goes to her son. Because he calls out: “Mom… help me…”

She cannot lift him. She cannot turn him.  She cannot even take him to the bathroom.

She simply stands beside him… Looks at her own son…
And cries, cries and cries – from almost complete helplessness.

Tsiala, 75-year-old: “What I fear most is one thing: if something happens to me, what will become of my son? Who will stay with him? Who will take care of him?”

Tsiala urgently needs heart surgery – doctors say she needs a valve replacement. The state has promised to cover the operation… But there is one terrible question with no answer:

Who will stay with Gocha while his mother is in the hospital?
Who will lift him from the bed? Who will feed him, wash him, help him get through even a single day?

Gocha was serving in the army when tragedy struck at the age of 20. While he was running, his legs suddenly gave out, and all his strength was gone. He could not finish his service. Soon after, doctors gave him a devastating diagnosis: muscular atrophy. From that moment on, his life seemed to stop.

Gocha once had love… A woman he dreamed of a future with. But he let her go. Not because he stopped loving her – But because he loved her too much.

Gocha, 50-year-old: “I didn’t want her to watch me die while still alive… I didn’t want her to suffer.” »

How much suffering has this heroic woman endured? She buried her husband. She buried her son. She has another daughter—also with muscular atrophy.

They survive on almost nothing: a disability pension and a 60-lari allowance.

There is not enough food – they receive it from the church once a day.

The house is cold – there is no heating.

The floor is rotting – it could collapse at any moment.

They tried to find a caregiver.

They did…

The woman worked for two days, took the money in advance – and disappeared.

Even a small donation could become salvation for this family. This is one of those moments when they simply cannot cope without us.
