“I worked all my life, fighting for survival… This accursed disease broke me, deprived me of the opportunity to earn the bread for the day” sighs Lela, 51.
At the age of 43, when the poor woman worked at a construction site, a large board fell on her head. Soon she had a stroke… Lela was left speechless for a long time. As a result, she is disabled, changing rented apartments, living in terrible conditions, suffering from loneliness, hunger, cold … And she has absolutely no one to ask for help.

“The Lord has saved the most valuable thing – my life!  And I’m grateful to him for that!  – crosses herself Lela. “I’ve been used to difficulties for a long time… Fate hasn’t spoiled me.”

We visited her in her miserable, eternally cold room, which fits a bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom… The unhappy woman shares her sad story with us.

Lela: For the most of my life I’ve been alone, trying to survive, to stay afloat. I had a stroke eight years ago… Thanks to my good neighbors, that they found me in time, managed to take me to hospital, and save me… I spent a long time in hospital. I couldn’t talk at all, I thought I was going to die… Doctors, endless procedures, injections… But, alas, my life will never be the same.  I was entitled to the disabled person status, it is impossible to fully restore my speech, and I can’t do any physical work.  Now I exist on the allowance only, I live in this shack and I think with horror about tomorrow… All my days are similar to each other: full of loneliness, cold and hunger.  I am still alive thanks to my good neighbors, who sometimes treat me with dinner, sometimes give me some clothes, feel sorry for me…

– How did it happen that you found yourself absolutely alone in this rented apartment?

Lela: I have lived a hard life … And I don’t want to remember it, to be honest… After the stroke, a lot has been erased from my memory, probably for the best … I was born in the village of Nichbisi, in a very poor family. While the other children went to school, I used to work with pick and shovel. We lived very hard … Then my brother got married, you know, a young family, a small house. I decided not to embarrass them and moved to Tbilisi to work. I sold my part of the land parcel and bought a one-room apartment here, fortunately, they were quite cheap then. I was about 30 then. I worked at a construction site, earning enough to live on. I took on even the most difficult work, which only men were supposed to do… Apparently, it ruined my health… I underwent two operations one after another: first they removed the ovary cyst, then appendicitis. But something went wrong, sepsis developed. I needed huge money for the treatment, so I had to sell my apartment. Oh, it was a pity, but I had to save myself somehow! I managed to pull through with God’s help. I even returned to the construction site. But since then, for 14 years now, I have been living in rented apartments.

– Lela how did it happen that you had a stroke?

Lela: As I already said, after recovery I returned back to work at the construction site, where a large board fell on my head. Sparks fell from my eyes … It was terribly painful, of course, but then I did not pay attention to it, my colleagues even laughed: how strong my head turned out to be. But literally a few days later, early in the morning, I had a stroke. I don’t know if it was the result of that blow… A neighbor came to me early in the morning for coffee and found that I was lying on the bed, unable to utter a word, and the right side of my body, my arm and leg were paralyzed. She called the other neighbors for help, and they took me to hospital. In fact, they saved my life. May God grant them health!

– Do you take any medications now? Is it really impossible for you to recover? What do the doctors say?

Lela: Unfortunately, my situation is hopeless. Thank God, I can somehow talk, but I could have remained dumb! This would be equal to death! I’m completely alone all day, but at least I can chat with my neighbors. If I was speechless… I don’t want even to imagine that. The problem is that I can no longer work, and the allowance I get is woefully insufficient.

– Doesn’t you family, there in the village, help you in any way?

Lela: Oh, no! My mother died several years ago of a heart attack, my father is disabled. My brother has a lot of his own worries and troubles, he must keep his family somehow…

– Lela, I’m sorry for the awkward question, why didn’t you start a family? Why didn’t you get married?

Lela:  It didn’t come up…I did not meet a person with whom I’d like to spend my whole life. Years passed in convulsive attempts to survive, to earn the bread for the day. Then these sores. When I realized it, it was already too late to arrange a personal life…

Of course, it’s not what I dreamed of when I came to the capital 20 years ago. But what can I do? It is whatever it is.

– Did you address the authorities for help?

Lela: The Townhall pays the rent for this room – 180 GEL. They give me a disability allowance – 140 GEL, and plus 50 GEL as a socially unprotected person. That’s all. For a long time I knocked all the doors, asking to give me at least a small room. They put me on the waiting list, and no progress from them so far …  I only ask for normal conditions – for the amount that they pay, one can find nothing better than this kennel. Only eight square meters – for a bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom. It is terribly cold here, in winter I try to heat it with gas, but I’m afraid of being poisoned… And the bills that come are tremendous.

– Lela, what is the allowance enough for?

Lela: For not to starve to death. I have to buy medications. Whatever remains is enough for bread … If not for the neighbors … Although it is difficult for them to cope, they still try not to leave me unattended: they bring me food, they give me clothes. Everything I wear are hand-me-downs. I don’t remember the last time I bought something for myself.

– Do you believe in God?

Lela: Yes, of course! I go to church and pray at home too. The Lord is merciful, he saved my life … And this is the main thing! Because I really could be dead now … No matter how hard it is, life is dear, no one wants to die … I am grateful to God that, by his grace, I was saved from an inevitable death!

– Lela, just an obvious question, what is your biggest dream?

Lela: I only want to have my own space, not to wander around looking for rented apartments. I want a quiet life… And… health. I understand that I cannot have it back. But in my dreams, I am healthy and able to work again… (Turns away, hides her tears.)

– What do you think, you need most in your home?

Lela: Food. This is the biggest problem. The allowance is not enough, I only can afford bread, tea, buckwheat… I really need a refrigerator, it happens that my neighbor brings me lunch. I would be happy to stretch it for a couple of days, but there is nowhere to store it, so that everything turns sour. Even if you make a simple soup, it will go bad. I would very much like to have an electric heater, as it is impossible to breathe in my little room because of this stove… Clothes, shoes … Too much dreams, excuse me for that, please!

– Lela, how did you learn about our Fund and why did you decide to address us?

Lela: From social networks, and my neighbors’ advice. They said that you really help those who are in trouble. If it were not for the extreme need, I would have never bothered anyone… I am even grateful to you for coming and listening to me. May God grant health to you and the generous friends of your Fund!

I am lucky to have you by me!

I thought I was about to die alone. But the Fund helped me with doctors and analyzes. The entire Georgia has become my new family! I am so happy and from the bottom of my heart I’d like to thank everyone who responded to my trouble! I have a family! And it is so big – the entire Georgia!

Our readers are real soul healers! Do you need evidence of that? Here you are! Just look at Lela Osepashvili. Do you recognize the unhappy, tear-stained woman we introduced to you a few months ago? https://chernovetskyifund.ge/en/projects/680-osepashvili/

Lela addressed us at the most difficult moment in her life – she was operated on, and she was suspected to have oncology. Fate has never spared her. From an early age, she worked tirelessly, trying not to be a burden to her family. She took on any, even the most difficult, male jobs and tried with all her might to survive. Lela had no time to think about her health, to arrange her personal life. But misfortunes haunted her: she had a severe head injury, a stroke, she became speechless…

But you, our amazing readers, manage to transform people with you love, affection, care, kindness, and warmth. Lela experienced such a transformation too. See the photos and rejoice together with Lela. This woman smiles again thanks to your big and kind hearts. Perhaps she smiles for the first time in many years she lived in poverty and loneliness.

“I don’t want to lose you anymore – let’s be in touch”

– Lela, we really like your new attitude and your smile. We have not yet asked you about the changes in your life, but it seems there are some.

Lela: You are back! I waited for you for so long! I changed my way of thinking. For the first time in many years, I felt that I was not alone. That’s a load off my mind. I feel calm now. You came to help me when I almost lost my hope. You saved me, you helped me, you warmed me. I thought I belonged to nobody, but I belong to you! You worried for me so much that I wanted to cry from joy! But I won’t, my dear ones, your Lela now smiles more often than she feels sad.

Your gifts, your support – are invaluable. You made my dream come true – this phone you gave me – became my friend. I am completely alone, but when you have the Internet, lonely long evenings pass fast. Social networks, movies, music – all this distracts me from gloomy thoughts and even sores. You just saved me from loneliness.

“I am learning to live comfortably!”

I have not shown you my household yet. I have a new fridge! Now I can live like a human being – with comfort. It turns out that one can live without hassle. I got used to suffering, and now I’m getting used to the amenities. You make me get used to.  You can’t imagine how grateful I am!

When I manage to buy some foodstuffs or if my neighbors will treat me, I am not afraid anymore that the food will turn sour. This is a very useful and practical gift. And I am also pleased that it is collective gift – so many kind people thought about me, so many have read my story!

“Now I am not afraid that food will go sour”

– They will read it again. Don’t even think that you will be left alone and in the shadows. Our readers will never give you such a chance. Would you like to single someone out?

Lela: Your readers are wonderful! They are just sweethearts! Let them not leave me, I agree with that! (laughs) On New Year Eve they brought me lots of foodstuffs. Probably the entire grocery shop. I’m used to living from hand to mouth, and for me it was a real New Year’s miracle. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the name of the person, who brough that. I have memory problems after stroke, but I want to thank him from the bottom of my heart. Also, one foreigner called me, he could hardly speak Georgian. He transferred me some money, which came in handy. I was operated not long before that, I was in a pretty serious condition, but I had no money for medications.

“It’s not just a phone – it’s a salvation from loneliness.”

– How did the local authorities react to our post?

Lela: Unfortunately, no one responded. I keep knocking at all doors, asking to pay attention to me, because my health condition prevents me from working and I live in terrible conditions. Only one official took pity on me and gave me 50 GEL, thanks to him for that. That’s the whole help. (sights)

If you compare that with the reaction of your readers, you will see the difference. It is so clear…

– What does this support and help from the Fund’s friends mean to you?

Lela: Loneliness is a terrible thing, and when besides that you are sick, and have no opportunity to earn your daily bread, then your life turns into torture. You feel that you are doomed. I was lucky to have you by me. Not everyone is that lucky. After the operation it was critical for me to have a proper medical treatment, but I would have never been able to cope with such expenses myself. I was weakened, morally depressed. No one knows what would have happened then. You did not let me die. You saved me. You are genuine, one can rely on you. And I don’t want to lose you. I want to have all of you in my life.

– We are together! Lela, maybe you have some more problems that our readers can help you with? Never make secrets with your friends.

Lela: I feel embarrassed to complain because you have done so much for me! It is hard to me – my health failed. A month and a half ago I was operated on my breast – there was a risk of developing cancer. Of course, I have problems – I am unable to earn money. You can probably understand how it feels to live here alone in this tiny room. I really need a mattress – an old one got completely rotten. I’d also like to have a small dresser. Well, why I am saying all that! I just want to ask you – please don’t forget me, please don’t doom me to loneliness. Once again, I’d like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart, I’d like to thank everyone who did not pass by – who spent their time to read my story, who transferred even a small amount of money to me and who just empathized with me. Thank you, a lot! God bless you!
