It is so sad when a child is deprived of childhood! “You know, my mom also prays and anoints me every day with the Father Gabriel’s oil. She says he takes care of kids!”- says Alexandre.
Just imagine for a moment how much his little heart hurts when he sees other children running and playing. His knees are scraped from crawling, and tears of sadness flow down his innocent face..
For Alexandre to be able to walk, he needs an overseas operation on his tendons. It’s 100% successful, but there’s no one in Georgia to perform it. Although doctors agree to do it to receive money from the Ministry of Health, they only end up tormenting the child! It’s absolutely necessary to go to Turkey! But the family is poor.

Alexander (6-year-old): Mom took me to the doctor. Then, when we returned home, I overheard mom saying these words to dad: “The doctor said he would be able to walk right after the operation. But what can we do? We don’t have the money for the surgery.” I swear these were the exact words mom said to dad. They thought I was sleeping. My mom cries all the time, so I don’t ask her anything. I feel she cries because of me, as she has no money, and she can’t afford the operation for me. When I grow up, I’ll become a doctor and operate on all the children who don’t have money, like me, for free. I don’t want another child to suffer like me. I asked my mom how much money she needs for my operation. She cried and didn’t answer me. She just hugged me.

I also do leg exercises in bed at night, and when I wake up in the morning, I hope that maybe now I’ll be able to walk, but no, my legs don’t support me. What did I do wrong? Sometimes, they pity me a lot, and only then do they play with me briefly. But you know what I worry about the most? That I can’t help my mom with household chores. I can assist other women neither. If robbers on the street snatch a woman’s purse, I will beat those thieves and return the purse to the woman when I can walk. I will help all people who are mistreated.

Our Aleko went to school on his own two feet! What stunning news! If you go back to the video the Fund recorded a year and a half ago, you’ll remember how this poor child, because of his leg problems, had to move around on his stomach, crawling on all fours. His hands, elbows, and knees were rubbed raw, bleeding. His greatest dream was to lift his body off the floor and feel that happiness most children take for granted – to walk!
Poor boy dragged his whole body across the floor like that. Just imagine – this is the same Aleko who now runs, jumps, and plays football!
We celebrate, we congratulate one another, and we congratulate all of you! The school is overwhelmed with joy – Aleko amazed everyone! On September 15, Aleko proudly refused even his walker and spent the whole day walking, just holding his mother’s hand. So proud, so happy, so stylish!
Oh, what a blessed day we have lived to see, friends! And it’s because you didn’t sit idly by – you worked tirelessly for a year and a half, giving Aleko a chance: surgery and treatment in Turkey, therapeutic swimming, massages, rehabilitation courses, physiotherapy, medications, bandages, walkers, groceries for our boy.
A year and a half of relentless effort, 15,500 GEL, and most recently, tendon surgery – all of this led to a real breakthrough!
Aleko: Before, I couldn’t wash my face or brush my teeth by myself. I could only crawl up to the sink, and my mom had to hold me so I wouldn’t fall. Now, Auntie, look – I stand at the sink by myself, and I can wash my face as much as I want!
I can climb the stairs home by myself, holding onto the railing. I can walk around the rooms, though I still need to hold onto things.
Auntie, I can dress myself now! I even put on Mamarda’s kit (the goalkeeper of Georgia’s national team, Mamardashvili), and now I’m getting ready to play football! Do you want me to show you how fast I can run with the walker?
Come outside, I’ll show you how I kick the ball! My legs are strong now, not thin like before. I’m a cool, strong boy, and I was so happy to show everyone at school!

Now I feel like I’m flying when I take my son to school! For the first time, my boy sets his feet firmly on the ground, on his whole foot – not just his toes. I wish health and prosperity to every person who has supported me!
Friends, for this progress to be lasting, Aleko must continue rehabilitation.
It is still far too early to say ‘enough.’
He needs to travel from Agayani to Tbilisi for rehab. Doing it by public transport is very difficult – it’s a long walk to the bus stop, and walkers don’t fit in the minibuses. The only realistic option is a taxi.
At home, the bathroom is not adapted at all. There’s no bath, no shower cabin. For Aleko, this creates endless difficulties. It needs to be adapted to his needs.
Friends, be honest – doesn’t it feel wonderful to know that you are like kind magicians? What you’ve already done – it’s more than anyone could ever hope to do in a lifetime!
