“Mate will live until the age of 15” — these are the terrifying words doctors told this poor boy’s mother, based on his diagnosis. Imagine being a mother and being told in advance that your child has only a few years left to live.  Even the thought of that could drive someone mad. But when a heart is filled with love for God, nothing is impossible. Even cruel death can be challenged through faith in the Lord.

Mate was only sixteen-month-old old when his bones began to deteriorate, and he became paralyzed from the waist down. This poor child now moves around by crawling on his knees. Because of this devastating illness, Mate has lost his memory and is gradually losing his sight. Dear God, how can such a small child endure so much suffering? And yet—not a single clear response from the Ministry of Health. Only you, people of faith, can help save this boy from a living nightmare. And God will be with you in this mission. What matters most now is that you extend a hand to this little boy – a boy who was even abandoned by his own father just a few months ago.

Just one photo is enough to understand how much 7-year-old Mate is suffering. The child tries to watch the peers play at least from the balcony. Out of his last strength, the boy tries to climb the wall. Unfortunately, he failed, and the exhausted child fell to the ground. But his little heart ached more than his knees. Because losing hope is the most painful thing in the world.

Mate’s eyes tell us that the child wants to live. But the cruel disease “says” his life will end at 15.

This is how the poor boy crawls around on his hands and knees. His knees are scraped raw from crawling. Not a single day in his life has Mate known what it feels like to walk.

He was just one and a half years old when his bones began to deteriorate, and from that day on, every day has been filled with pain. Mate has never gone to kindergarten or school. Do you know why? Because his mother couldn’t afford a wheelchair. Can you imagine that? This child has been confined to four walls because he doesn’t have a wheelchair. What did this little angel ever do to deserve this?

Look – he tries to go out onto the balcony just to watch the other kids play from afar. If Mate had a wheelchair, he could be outside too. The warm sun would touch his fragile body, and his mother could take him on walks by the sea, in the fresh air.

Look—he clings to the couch, trying to stand up. But every time, Mate falls to the ground. Because he is paralyzed from the waist down.

And his suffering doesn’t end there. The cruel disease is now robbing him of his sight. He can no longer distinguish colors.

Mate (7 years old): “Auntie,” he said to the Fund’s reporter, “I asked my sister to bring me a colored T-shirt, and she brought me a black and white one—but she says it’s colored. Is she joking? Auntie, look at this T-shirt. It’s black and white, right?” That was one of the hardest questions our reporter had ever been asked by a child.

According to Turkish doctors, it’s dangerous for Mate to travel by bus, car, or plane. As a result, doctors refused to transfer him to Turkey – even though the only place nearby where life-saving medication is available is Turkey. How can a single mother afford these medicines when she can’t even take her child from Khelvachauri to a hospital in Tbilisi? Mate’s life now depends not only on days, but on minutes. And because of cruel poverty, this poor child can’t even see a doctor. Is there any injustice worse than this?

This is Mate’s 9-year-old sister, Megi. Look into her eyes – see the pain, the despair, the helplessness. The girl accidentally overheard her mother tell their grandmother that Mate’s days are numbered. Since then, Megi’s eyes have lost their light.

Megi (9 years old): “I don’t go out to play either. My little brother is stuck inside, and I should be outside playing? No, I can’t even imagine doing that. I asked some older kids if they might see a post online about someone giving away a wheelchair. But… my brother isn’t lucky.”

Look at the torn sleeve on Megi’s T-shirt.

Megi (9 years old): “Mom saves every last penny to try to take Mate to a clinic in Tbilisi. My brother needs very expensive medicine, and I’m too embarrassed to ask Mom to buy me anything.  I always wear pants to school. I don’t even have a dress.”

This child cannot endure the pain any longer. Who knows – maybe the embrace of his beloved father would ease his suffering. But a few months ago, Mate’s father left. Maybe he just couldn’t bear to watch his son in pain.  Maybe, to him, Mate became a burden he wasn’t willing to carry. Maybe he simply chose another woman over the mother of his children.
But does the reason even matter? The fact is – he abandoned Mate and Megi at the time they needed him the most. And it doesn’t take money to care. No amount of money can replace a hug or a loving touch.

When the Fund’s reporter was leaving Mate’s house, the child looked at him with these eyes. A gaze full of silent pleading. Yes – he was begging with his eyes. There was a flicker of hope in Mate’s sad eyes when a “stranger auntie” told him she would tell everyone he doesn’t have a wheelchair. Mate’s biggest dream isn’t a toy car or a ball like other kids. Sadly, his only dream is a wheelchair.

Dear friends, let’s not break this child’s heart. Let’s help his poor mother afford the life-saving medicine he needs. Let’s help get Mate from Khelvachauri to a clinic in Tbilisi. It will take a lot of money, but if we, the people of Georgia, unite—we can save the life of 7-year-old Mate. The sad truth is: time is running out.
We must hurry – before cruel death wins.

If you are willing to visit the family and help them in person, here is their address: Khelvachauri, 48 Kvinitadze Street, apartment 2.

Every time you can help someone, just do it, and rejoice that the Lord has turned your heart toward someone else’s sorrow. That He is answering their prayers through you. That means you are chosen. May you always be blessed. And please—keep remembering those who suffer. Go visit them. That’s where you’ll discover your true worth – as a true Georgian, a great human being, just as the Lord created us to be.
