6-year-old little Mariam knows all the details of the lives of more than a hundred dead people! Surprisingly, she keeps many of their secrets and sometimes talks to them for a long time, sitting on the fence! After all, their relatives … Many left those places, and others – others who are alive – each has so many problems in Ozurgeti that sometimes they want to change places with the one they buried! And the majority – remember every day and plan to come, but then forget and repent, repent, until they remember less and less often! It happens that even for years those who loved and were loved and respected in life – gradually remain in the Earth forever forgotten by everyone and alone! For some graves people leave small sums of money! After all, rich people want to be buried in Tbilisi or another big city and in prestigious cemeteries! In the mountainous regions of Georgia and in such remote places, rich people are rarely buried! People do not know the simple wisdom that usually, the more expensive the grave and the monument over it, the less loved and respected the deceased was! At the funeral, such a person is paid a debt of insufficient attention, love and respect during life, and sometimes even a debt for betrayal! After all, a dead person is completely indifferent to where he is buried and how luxurious the monument over his grave is! Mariam prays sincerely over every grave! Whether they paid or not, it doesn’t matter to the child! But miraculously, the dead did not remain in debt: they give the child dreams of tasty meat and beautiful toys…, and she, her mother and two brothers have not yet died of hunger!

An incredible story! 6-year-old Mariam cleans cemeteries. Yes, the little girl collects trash carelessly left by adults and throws it in the trash bin. Then she wipes the dust off the gravestones. At the same time, the girl looks up to the sky and prays to God for the souls of the dead. If the fund’s correspondent had not seen this with her own eyes, we would also find it hard to believe that such a small child could do this. Mariam was only 4 years old when she first went with her mother to clean the cemetery. In order to save her children from starvation, the young mother cleaned the cemeteries, and with the money she earned, at the end of the day, she bought food for 3 small children. Since Mariam was the youngest, the poor mother could not leave her alone at home and took her with her. And the pious little girl pulled grass from the graves with her tiny hands. In September, Mariam will go to school for the first time, but as she told the fund’s correspondent, after school she will still go to the cemetery with her mother. “The dead in heaven, they see me tending their graves,” the girl whispered, and tears welled up in her big blue eyes. All of Georgia, the whole world should know about our little Georgian Mariam, because she is a real angel sent by God to earth!

Look at her divine beauty! Just like angels… When morning comes and other children gather in the yard to play, Mariam and her mother go to the largest cemetery in Ozurgeti. The girl, weakened by hunger, walks a kilometer from her home to the cemetery. But as soon as she arrives at the cemetery, she is filled with divine power. Isn’t this a real miracle of God?

Mariam knows the stories of almost all the deceased buried here. Some of them died at the same age as she is now. The girl is most upset by the tombstones on the graves of children.

“He was my age. And now he lies under this earth, auntie…” she said, and tears streamed down her cheeks.

The girl collects plastic bottles scattered by the wind one by one throughout the huge cemetery. Then she throws them into the trash container.

She wipes the dusty photographs on the tombstones with a rag. And she pulls out the grass with her tiny, tender hands. Yes, all this is done by a child exhausted from hunger.

Mariam “introduced” the fund’s correspondent to the deceased, whose graves she takes special care of. With sadness in her voice, the girl told our journalist the stories of various deceased.

Mariam (6 years old): “Auntie, when I first went to the cemetery with my mother, I was scared. Look, Auntie, there are so many dead here. Then, when I asked my mother to tell me about them, I felt very sorry for them. Then I asked my mother to take me with her. I brought flowers from our yard. Sometimes I left fruit on the grave. I did this because I believe that they are looking at me from heaven.”

“When my mother cleans cemeteries, she gets paid little, but I still clean cemeteries, despite the fact that I don’t get paid, because I’m still a child.”

– Mariam, I just heard you whisper to Mom that you were hungry.

Mariam: “Auntie, I didn’t want you to hear these words. Yes… I’m hungry. Yesterday, my brothers and I went to bed hungry. And this morning we only drank tea. And I love to eat so much, Auntie. Especially the food that Mom says is expensive. I love meat very much. So much… so much that even the smell of fried meat makes my mouth water, Auntie. There is a restaurant not far from my house, Auntie. And when I’m very hungry, I go to this restaurant, because the smell of fried meat comes from there.”

Hungry Mariam herself shares her piece of bread with hungry dogs. God, what a big heart this tiny girl has.

Mariam: “I turned 6 years old. I have to go to school and I am very ashamed because I do not have a new dress and shoes. When my mother cleans cemeteries and gets paid, she says she will buy something, and I say I don’t want to, buy my brother medicine.”

And this is 35-year-old Irina, Mariam’s mother. How young and beautiful… and how much grief she has endured. Her husband beat her mercilessly in front of her young children. In the end, he even put a knife to her throat in front of the child – “Look, I’ll slaughter your mother like a pig now.” Law enforcement agencies arrested this man – or rather, this monster. After leaving prison, he left Georgia and started another family. Since then, he has never asked whether his children are alive or dead.

Irina (35 years old): “I returned to my sick father’s house with my children – to an emergency hut. I saw with my own eyes how the children could barely stand on their feet from hunger. It is impossible to describe in words what a mother’s heart feels at such moments. I started cleaning the cemetery so that I could buy bread and a kilogram of pasta for three children with the money I received at the end of the day. Mariam loves meat, but the money I earns from working at the cemetery is not enough for meat, so sometimes I buy frozen chicken legs from the store, which are usually used to feed dogs.”

Here in this terrible emergency hut sleeps a little angel. A child who looks after the graves of the dead, and at the same time does not know whether she will wake up in the morning or whether her lifeless body will be found under the rubble of this crumbling house.

Pious people, small houses are cheap in Ozurgeti. If all of Georgia unites, the life of this angelic girl and her younger brothers will no longer be in danger. If each of us buys one less ice cream for our children, they will lose nothing, and this one lari will make a huge contribution to the fact that Mariyam no longer lives in this barn. Doesn’t this good girl deserve a happy childhood and a decent life?

A kind girl takes care of even the dead – should we not take care of a living child? God forbid that one morning we hear that Mariam’s big blue eyes have closed forever under the rubble of an emergency hut… Will we ever forgive ourselves for this?
