If we don’t help little Mariam from Georgia now – she has only two years left to live! We don’t often hear stories this heartbreaking. That’s why representatives of the Chernovetskyi Fund traveled to the village of Rekha in the Gori district – to visit this brave little girl. But what we saw there… was far worse than we could have imagined. As we approached 5-year-old Mariam, she lifted her big, beautiful Georgian eyes, looked at us pleadingly, and – pushing through pain far beyond her years – whispered: “Save me, auntie. Mama told me you have many, many kind wizards around you. Tell them I really want to live.  And make friends with their children.”

Poor, poor little angel… She still doesn’t know that leading foreign doctors have stated in their diagnosis that the child urgently needs an expensive surgery! How could those doctors know that Mariam’s parents are just humble, poor Georgians? “We give the child no more than two years to live.” That is their terrifying verdict.  But friends, there is one way to save this little girl – and we’ll tell you how in this article.

You might be thinking: “She must be crying for a toy… or candy?” No. This angel cries because she no longer has the strength to fight death.

When I – a correspondent of the Chernovetskyi Fund – went with a social worker to visit Mariam, I already knew her condition was serious. But hearing her mother say, “Mariam has two years left to live,” made the ground feel like it was collapsing beneath us. What can one possibly say to a mother at a moment like that…?

Mariam was born with a severe spinal defect – an open wound. She was operated on just two days after birth.  But what followed was a nightmare.

The wound wouldn’t heal. Complications set in. And eventually… her spine began to deform. No one could stop it.

And now, this is what her back looks like

Not a single vertebra is properly aligned. But worst of all, the deformity is crushing her lungs. Her internal organs are failing, little by little. You understand what that means.

But that’s not all – Mariam also suffers from hydrocephalus. She underwent brain shunt surgery at just four months old. She’s only five. Yet she’s already survived five major surgeries. Five rounds of anesthesia. God, how does her tiny heart survive all this? And the answer is there – in her eyes.

Because Mariam desperately wants to live. She’s almost out of strength… but she still fights. She still resists the cruel grip of death.

In one single photo of her face, you can feel a pain that no words can ever express. She watches from her wheelchair as other children run and play. She wants that too. To play in the sand…To run…To splash in the river…To gather daisies in the meadow. But that cursed wheelchair won’t let her.

Why was this little angel born into so much suffering? Why has her whole life been a struggle since day one? God, where are You in moments like these? Can’t You hear her cry? She’s not asking for a miracle. She just wants to hold on to the life You gave her.

Mariam (5-year-old): “Auntie… I see God and the angels in my dreams. They caress me. God holds me in His arms and strokes my head. The angels sing to me. Auntie, if I die, I’ll be with the angels—but I don’t want to die yet, because I miss my twin sister Marta and my little brother Toma so much. I don’t want to be without them. When people turn 100, that’s when they die, right? I want to live to be 100 too. But sometimes I think… maybe dying is okay. Do you know why? Because when I’m alive, my legs hurt, my back hurts, my stomach hurts… everything hurts. I can’t take it anymore. But dead people… they don’t feel pain.” I listened to this five-year-old child… and I was stunned. I realized then that Mariam is truly an angel – sent to Earth with a special purpose.

And that is why the devil is trying so hard to take her from us – to stop her from sowing seeds of goodness on this broken earth. Yes… Mariam is God’s chosen one, and that’s exactly why Satan is fighting against her.

There’s only one way to save her:  an urgent, complex spinal surgery abroad. The procedure is so sophisticated that most of the world’s leading hospitals have declined to perform it.

But by some miracle, her mother – with great perseverance – found a renowned international clinic willing to take the case. The cost? $70,000. Money the family simply doesn’t have.

So now, dear friends of the Fund, the question is: Will we pass God’s test? Will we save the angel He has sent into our lives? We can. We must. And we can do it! The countdown on Mariam’s life has already begun…
