“Little Georgian girl for sale!„ And what happens to her next? That’s up to whoever pays the most. No one cares what the buyer will do with her – no one except us, dear friends. That’s why, when we publish stories about the poverty of another Georgian family, we’re not begging for money. We don’t need your cash – we’re reaching for your souls, the ones God gave you to help save others and to be saved yourselves. To remind you that this is your duty before God.

The scoundrel – the child’s own father – took a deposit from the buyer the very day this little angel was born! But the child’s mother refused the money outright. Beaten to within an inch of her life, she took her baby and fled. And now the mother and the child live in devastating poverty – something we absolutely must change if we become closer to God! To everyone who helps, we will send this photo along with one heartfelt request: to visit the family each month and support them emotionally and financially, together with our Fund, on their journey of survival
Honestly, in all my life as the correspondent of the Fund, I’ve never come across anything like this. I’ve seen many troubled families, I know stories of children ending up in orphanages… But children being sold? That’s something I’ve only seen in crime reports on TV.
Just look at this little angel. What could possibly drive a father to such an inhuman act? The coldness with which he tried to sell his own child for profit is chilling.
Nino, mother (31-year-old): “My ex-husband used to beat me. I was always covered in bruises. People ask me, ‘Why did you have a child with such a monster?’ But how could I take an innocent life – a baby growing inside me? That would have been a terrible sin. It is not my daughter’s fault! Later, my ex-husband got married again and treated his new wife the same way – beat her, then tried to sell their baby too. Now he’s in prison… for domestic violence”.
Nino is now raising little Mariam on her own. The young mom can’t go to work because there’s no one to leave the child with. They live in shocking poverty — in a dilapidated hut with a leaking roof.
Look here: the ceiling is made of cardboard and the walls are covered in mold, which is dangerous to a child’s health.
Nino: “I can’t bear to look into my daughter’s hungry eyes. If we have any food at all, I give it to her. I go to bed hungry myself.”
Mariam (5-year-old): I have not eaten anything today, Auntie! All we have is bread that Mommy brought from the free social canteen. I’m hungry. My tummy hurts! I’d love to have a matsoni (yogurt) soup right now”.
Mariam is five, but she still sleeps in diapers. Her mother can’t afford to take her to the doctor to address this delicate issue. Nino herself has a lot of health issues too. After the beatings inflicted by her ex-husband, she now suffers from frequent headaches and dizziness, sometimes even losing consciousness. But she has no money for diagnosis or treatment.
Nino: “When I’m feeling bad, my daughter never leaves my side. She sits at the head of the bed, hugs me, and strokes my hair. She says I’m both her mommy and her daddy”.
Look at how much this young woman is suffering. She has no washing machine, so she scrubs everything by hand. In the summer heat, she still has to light the stove just to warm water.
Little Mariam is her mother’s helper. There’s no running water in the home — she collects it from an outdoor tap.
They don’t even have a bathroom. The child bathes in a plastic basin.
This year, Mariam is supposed to start first grade. But she has no backpack, no clothes, no shoes. She worries and cries at the thought that her classmates might laugh at her.
Nino: “Our only hope is in kind people. If no one helps us… I don’t know what will happen”.
Friends, the eyes of this child are silently begging for help. We cannot turn away. Please, help.
A child who had just come into the world, who hadn’t even opened their eyes yet, had already been destined to be sold. Dear friends of the Fund, don’t leave little Mariam to fate. Don’t let her starve to death.
Friends, you’ve been incredibly generous in helping the sick and dying. But many of you pass over the starving people, not realizing that poverty is the cruelest illness of all. It slowly – and surely – kills the Georgian people in the most terrible way… It kills our dignity.
