Where will this family with two small children live? That’s a question for all of us to answer, together. We can make it happen with just $10,000. And together – we will raise it! We’ll take care of furnishing the house with appliances and furniture. Oh, how we love seeing a broken-down home turn into a fairy tale! To hear children laugh, and to see their mother cry tears of joy… And maybe we’ll even manage it for less. But one thing’s for sure – we will raise not children broken by poverty, but proud Georgians!

Should it really be that only foreigners or the children of the rich get to eat the food Georgia is famous for around the world? We’d give anything to see these boys enjoying the dishes our country takes pride in.

You’ll eat khinkali too, Saba!

Saba (11 years old): “Kids laugh at me. They say I live in a half-collapsed shack full of rats and mice. And they’re right. I never invite friends over – I’m too embarrassed to show them where I live. We don’t even have a bathroom or a toilet.”

Saba: The roof leaks. When it rains, it rains inside the house too. All of us pray the storm ends quickly. We’re scared the roof will collapse on our heads.

Saba: Our ceiling looks like a sieve.

Saba: “My parents can’t afford groceries. We eat plain bread.”

 The children eat pieces of stale bread. But in their minds, they pretend they’re holding crispy fried chicken legs. That little illusion helps them eat with a bit more appetite. But more than their stomachs, it’s their hearts that ache.

Meri, 33 (mother): “I grew up without a mother or father, in terrible poverty. And I don’t want my children to live the same way. A few days ago, during a heavy storm, our whole yard flooded. The water rose up to the doorstep. What will happen to us if the roof caves in and the ceiling falls on our heads?  I have nowhere else to go with my two children. I’ve looked death in the eye.”

In the child’s eyes, fear and sadness seem to be battling to see which one will win.

Little Gabriel had an epileptic seizure – his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed.  The family has no money to take him to a doctor, so the mother lives in constant fear it might happen again.

Saba has caught a cold and is coughing badly. His tonsils are inflamed, but they can’t afford any medicine.

Maia, 57 (grandmother): “I don’t even know what to worry about more – that the house is falling apart, or that the boys are in poor health? If the roof isn’t mended soon, they’ll be left without a roof over their heads. But if we don’t take care of their health and something happens to them – what good is a house then?”

The children don’t have a single toy.
Since they were small, they’ve been helping out in the yard, working with their parents.  Saba and Gabriel are children whose poverty stole their childhood. And now it’s trying to steal their dreams and hopes, too. And that – that is the worst thing that can happen to a child. When a person loses faith, they drift away from God. That’s why, when the devil wants to take hold of someone’s soul, the first thing he tries to destroy is their dreams and hopes.

Even a simple washing machine would ease this family’s burden. Just imagine how exhausted the mother of two boys is after scrubbing all their clothes by hand. The sons feel so sorry for their mother – they rinse the laundry to help her.

Friends, this honest, good family doesn’t even have proper beds – their old ones have been soaked by rain too many times. There’s no gas stove, no fridge, no TV. The boys dream of bathing in a real bathroom, not in a plastic basin in the middle of the yard. Together, we can do a good deed – we can build a real bathroom for them.

Saba and Gabriel are just like our own children – like our younger brothers. They believe kind people will help them. And that no one will ever dare to laugh at them again.  We can’t leave them alone!
