Seven-year-old Lile has a severe allergy to dust and old furniture. Every night becomes torture – terrible coughing and sneezing fits keep her from sleeping, because she has to lie on a broken, collapsing bed. Her exhausted and desperate mother has no money for medicine that could ease Lile’s suffering.  All she can do is drip saline solution into the girl’s nose, which brings only brief relief – and even that cannot be used regularly. But what choice does poor Lile have? She is just a child from a family living in poverty.

Lile, 7: “Auntie, look how much dust comes out of this old bed. The worst part is that there are bedbugs in the mattress, and their bites hurt so much. When my allergy starts, I can’t breathe – I feel like I’m suffocating. I need a new bed so I can sleep without waking up coughing. But mommy and daddy don’t have any money.”

Saba, 3: “I love my sister very much. I want her to be healthy. I’d give her my bed, but it’s too small for her.”

Nato and Alexander are orphans. Their parents passed away long ago, leaving them with no one to turn to for help. The family “survives” on a meager social allowance of 400 lari per month – barely enough for the most basic needs.

Six years ago, Alexander’s life changed forever. A terrible accident – a tree fell on his leg.

After four difficult surgeries, doctors managed to save it, but Alexander can no longer work.  Even walking exhausts him.

Nato is seriously ill as well. She suffers from diabetes and psoriasis. Recently, when she visited the doctor, she faced a cruel choice: buy medicine and pay for tests or feed her children. A mother’s heart wouldn’t let her leave her little ones hungry.

This is the children’s simple lunch: tea without sugar and plain bread.

Thinking back to when Alexander was healthy and the family had enough, Nato feels a deep ache for what they have lost. Now even food is a problem. The most important thing is that the children don’t go hungry.

A year ago, Nato lost her mother, who had been fighting both diabetes and stomach cancer. Since then, she has lived in constant fear of sharing the same fate. But her love for her children gives her the strength to keep going. She wants to live—to watch Lile and Saba grow up, and to give them the childhood she never had.

The family lacks even the most basic necessities. What they need most are beds for the children, a table, chairs, and a wardrobe.

Nato, mother (38): “I look at my children, and my heart breaks with sorrow. We are not asking for much – just a little help, so our little ones can live with dignity. So that Lile can sleep calmly, without suffocating from the dust. We believe that kind-hearted people will hear us and help us escape this terrible poverty.”
