Four-year-old Nunuka, five-year-old Petre, and seven-year-old Giorgi have been left orphaned. These three little angels could end up on the streets without a roof over their heads. Weakened by hunger, the children face the threat of various illnesses, yet no one notices tears in their eyes. That is why their poor mother turned to the Chernovetskyi Fund. And do you know why? Five-year-old Petre cries bitterly. He can no longer endure hunger. Every day brings only stale bread for breakfast, lunch, and dinner – nothing else.

Petre, 5 years old: “I want to eat! I’m hungry! I’d eat fried chicken right now; I don’t even remember the last time I had meat. I also want waffles, cookies, candies, and fruit.”

Friends, these beautiful, big-eyed children – Nunuka, Petre, and Gio – are orphans. Their father lost his life to a long battle with tuberculosis.

In their angelic, sea-colored eyes is a silent plea for help. The little girl, weakened by hunger, eats a piece of stale bread just to ease the pain in her stomach, even for a little while. Yes, today a small piece of bread is this child’s “dinner.” Tomorrow, the poor little girl will be dreaming even of that tiny piece of bread.

Lamzira, the mother, is ready to endure hunger herself just to keep her children fed. “I’m not asking for myself, only for my little ones. Feed them, just so they don’t go hungry,” she says, heartbroken.

Lamzira’s world fell apart in an instant. Her husband’s death left her alone with three little children in her hands.  The family survives on social allowance. Until recently, they lived in an old tin carriage; now they have to rent an empty apartment. There is no washing machine, no stove. Their “home” doesn’t even have a bathroom, and the poor mother has to ask neighbors for help – to bathe the children and wash their clothes.

Look – the little angels sleep together on a falling-apart sofa. They need children’s beds, mattresses, pillows, and bedding!

The situation is becoming unbearable: the family cannot afford the rent. Three months of debt have accumulated, and Lamzira worries about what will happen if they are evicted. Where will she go with three children when winter is coming?

Petre, 5: “Mom, I want to go to kindergarten!  There are lots of toys and good food there! “

Lamzira, mom, 39: “All the other kids have started school, but mine haven’t. I couldn’t take Nunuka and Petre to kindergarten because the teachers require a health certificate, which costs 60 lari. I don’t have that kind of money.  So the little ones stayed home.”

And where is the government when orphaned children and kids from poor families can’t even go to kindergarten simply because their mother can’t afford a medical certificate? Is everything in this country really for sale?  Do little angels have to buy their childhood happiness too?

Nunuka, 4: “Mommy, why are we poor? Other children have everything, and we have nothing.”

Reporter: – And what do other children have that you don’t?

Nunuka, 4: “They have everything I can only dream of. Candies, pretty dresses, shoes, toys, a phone, a TV. Sometimes friends give us their old cars and dolls. They are broken, of course, but we are still happy. It’s better than nothing.”

Lamzira is pregnant.  Four months in, and nothing is ready for the baby. No crib, no diapers, no clothes.  In February, in the middle of winter, she will have to bring a newborn into a home with no heating and no hot water.

Lamzira, 39: “Some people ask cruelly, ‘Why bring a child into the world when you’re already so poor?’ Many advised me to have an abortion, but how can I kill the child in my womb? That would be like stabbing one of my children in the heart.”

Nunuka, 4: “If my mom is hungry, then my little brother or sister in her belly is hungry too.”

The children often catch colds, and even a simple illness becomes life-threatening because their mother cannot afford medicine.
