Lonely grandmother Areknaz (she’s 80) lives at the very edge of Georgia (340 km from Tbilisi). For a long time she prayed to God, and He sent us to her! She’s as naïve as a child and very, very ill. She doesn’t understand that for us it is an honor – a great honor – to save her life! She asks not to be deprived of the chance to see the sunrise and sunset again, to hear the birds sing, to hear the voices of those she loves, to remember the people she once loved, and to pray once more to the Creator. Lord, we thank You for entrusting our friends at the Fund with yet another Georgian life! Glory to You!

In old age, people become like small children – and Grandmother Areknaz is no exception. She is a good and gentle person, as naïve as a little child.

Once, half-paralyzed on her right side, she heroically dragged herself to the local administration. The official who met her didn’t offer her tea, didn’t give her a hand, and wouldn’t even listen when she tried to explain that the roof of her hut was about to collapse on her head and end her life.   Instead, he dismissed her: “Go, granny…Go to the Chernovetskyi Fund and its friends!”

Such an answer is absolutely shameless, if he really said that, because helping her is the direct duty of the local administration.

But perhaps he thought: “So what… just some poor old thing showed up here about a roof!” She dared to bother such an important person! Maybe we should repair his roof too… maybe he’ll become kinder.

In truth, the whole house needs fixing – but the grandmother’s dream is only the roof.  She’s too embarrassed even to ask for small things.  A Georgian soul!

“Perhaps some will judge me,” she sighs deeply. “She’s already so old, today or tomorrow she may die, and yet she still asks for help to fix her roof…  I’m not hiding from death; I just want to die with dignity. Even a snake doesn’t deserve to be buried alive under rubble.”

– it’s a water-rotted roof and walls, and the smell of damp that always fills the home of an 80-year-old grandmother. When it rains outside, it rains on her head too.

Her era is over. Now she lives only with memories and nostalgia. All that remains from the past is this photo. Look how beautiful she was — refined, like a frame from a 1960s film. How beautiful she was, how much her husband and children loved her – children who today are themselves starving. Yet in our Fund we believe: you may starve yourself, but not let your mother starve, not let the roof fall on her head. Lord, forgive us sinners!

The stroke she suffered several years ago left her right arm and leg weak.

Every step costs her great effort.

The house is collapsing: the roof leaks, the walls crumble, the floor creaks. Every day is a fight for simple survival. Is this how she must die?

“I have a son and a daughter; they live in the city… But how can they help? They themselves are poor. They are good children, they just have nothing to give me,” the grandmother tries to reassure us.

Even at 80, she goes out into the yard, leaning heavily on her cane, and tries to plant beans and vegetables to somehow survive.

Despite everything, Areknaz still keeps her kindness and hope. Her request is simple:  “Please, if you can, help me live out the last years of my life in my own home. Please, I don’t want it to collapse. So many memories, so much has happened here. Please, help me… I just want a new roof. It’s not that much money – but I don’t have even a tetri for repairs.”

This is Batua. He’s 10. Grandmother Areknaz found him as a tiny puppy freezing in the snow and saved his life. In return, the dog has repaid her with gratitude and loyalty. Even the smell of roasting meat from wealthier homes hasn’t lured him away. Batua is the only faithful friend the grandmother has, the one she sometimes shares a piece of bread with from the state canteen.

“Lord, I beg You, tell me – where does youth go, where does beauty disappear…”

Is it really so hard to grant such a simple wish to this grandmother?
Does she deserve, at 80, for the roof to fall on her head?

We can give her happiness. We can give her a peaceful old age.
We can give her warmth and safety. Let’s unite. Let’s help Grandmother Areknaz. Let’s give her a life without fear.
