TRAGEDY!

A huge human tragedy, friends – and your chance to reach out to our Lord!  In the Bible, it is said: ‘Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done’ (Proverbs 19:17).

This winter, a snowstorm destroyed the home of this large family. These seven Georgians, living 305 kilometers from Tbilisi, are in danger of freezing to death! They have lost everything – Everything except their faith in God, and in our conscience.

Gio, 10 years old: “The roof of our house collapsed during a heavy snowfall. I was terrified. But the Lord saved us! Since then, I pray every night. I ask God to always stay with us.”

Just imagine that terrible cracking sound – the moment when a house that once felt safe begins to collapse. That fear will stay forever in the memories of the three youngest children, who now     flinch at every noise. The tragedy struck at four in the afternoon, when everyone was home.  It’s a miracle the children were playing in the yard – otherwise, the falling roof could have crushed them.

Friends, after the snowfall, nothing was left in these little angels’ house – no clothes, no furniture, no appliances. The avalanche of snow wiped everything off the ground.

In a normal country, children are happy when it snows. In Georgia, the snow nearly became a killer. Is that irony of fate? No! No! It’s something else – and wise Georgians, you can guess what.

Ten-year-old Gio showed our Fund’s reporter the room where he used to sleep.

Gio, 10 years old: “Auntie, the beds broke, the mattresses got soaked. There used to be a fireplace, a couch, a wardrobe, a TV – and now there are only bare, moldy walls.”

Anita, 4 years old: “I want to go home. I’m scared, Auntie!”

These little angels could have been buried alive under the collapsed roof if not for the Lord’s miracle. Now, all they have left in this world are bare walls. Friends, it’s time to continue working miracles! Now everything depends on whether the Lord touches our hearts.

For a long time, their house was without a roof. Snow fell right inside the rooms. Can you imagine what it looked like? The family – parents with three children – spent two months in a boarding house in Ureki, then moved into a rented flat. Now they’re staying with relatives. Seventeen people living under one roof – four families in one house. They take turns doing laundry because they don’t even have a washing machine.

Those tiny hands should be holding toys right now. This is what a stolen childhood looks like. Why are they being punished? Why? Who has an answer? Here at the Fund, we’re all silent… We have no answer. Or maybe we do – but saying it hurts and keeping silent hurts a little less.

But we can’t keep silent! Silence is a crime! We must speak out loud – in Georgia, children are doomed to be buried alive under the rubble

Kind people, Georgians, brothers and sisters! These are the children of our small homeland. Look how these good, hard-working boys help their parents clear the debris. They’re not asking for toys – they’re asking for the basic things they need to survive.

Tamar, 30 years old (the mother): “Right now, we need basic necessities – beds with mattresses, bedding, wardrobes. We don’t have a refrigerator or a washing machine.” Let’s help this good family live like human beings again! They must not lose faith — neither in their fellow Georgians nor in God, who loves Georgia so much that He gave us the most beautiful land and the kindest people!

We have clothing at the Fund, and we’ll make sure they’re dressed even better than before the disaster. But clothes alone won’t get them through the fall and winter!

You see the terrible misfortune that has struck the Oragvelidze family. They miraculously survived the storm – but now the hardest part begins, as they must rebuild everything from scratch. Friends, let’s unite all across Georgia and help these little angels return home.

When you look at your children sleeping peacefully in their warm beds, remember that another child is lying among collapsed walls, in a bed soaked by the rain.  When you buy Christmas ornaments for your own child, remember that for another child, the snow may bring a death sentence. The Lord teaches us not to see children as ‘ours’ or ‘someone else’s.’ They are the angels of the Lord – sent down from heaven to build towers of kindness on this sinful earth.
