He Is a very, very kind boy. And he almost always at home. Like a frightened little animal! He wants to hide his grief from the world! After all, he has six fingers!

When I, a correspondent for the Chernovetskyi Fund, went to Ozurgeti, the remote and very poor village where little Jaba lives, the child, as soon as he saw me, asked, “Auntie, show me your hands?” and began carefully counting my fingers…

Before I could figure out what was going on, he asked again, “And the other one.”

I showed the left one too. And at that moment, in his sad eyes, I felt with all my soul and heart such a profound disappointment in the little one’s soul that tears streamed down my face and I turned away!

“What’s the matter, my friend?”

And then Jaba showed me – he brought his left hand to my eyes!

Humanly speaking, I wanted to immediately tell the little boy a thousand words, that we would help. But the words stuck in my throat! After all, Jaba was not looking for consolation. Adults told him this many, many times, and then they went off somewhere to do their own thing and he never saw them again. It was important to Jaba to find at least one person in this cruel world with six fingers. Because when he went out into the yard for a walk, children wouldn’t look at him, but would disgustedly search for his sixth finger — as if with a knife they were cutting and stabbing his kind heart! There were times when many were simply disgusted to offer him a hand. (I don’t want to develop this theme further.) To say that this was terrible is to say nothing! Children can be very cruel! They often don’t understand the grief of others, even though they are kind by nature.

What is the real reason for wanting to see at least once a person who, like him, had six fingers! It’s this… To take his hand and be friends with him for the rest of his life — Jaba’s life!

I unwittingly disappointed the boy… My soul hurt… But Jaba’s tiny heart hurt even more and I saw it in his eyes.

The child’s misfortunes do not end there!

He has a hernia in his tummy, and even if his finger doesn’t hurt, Jaba suffers from terrible tummy pain. The only way out is surgery, but his mother has no money at all, and besides, she will then have to choose between her children?

Horror, horror, horror! And there’s no end to it!!!

Our dear friends, the fact is that Jaba’s three-year-old brother has suffered brain damage. Unfortunately, the injury is so severe that the child’s limbs are paralyzed, and he crawls on all fours.

God, how this poor child suffers…

According to qualified doctors, it can be cured, but the treatment is expensive. What should a 27-year-old mother do? Which child should she choose? You wouldn’t wish even your worst enemy to face such a terrible choice.

Tamari (27 years old) – “Sometimes I wish I could die, so I wouldn’t have to watch my children suffer anymore. Jaba needs two surgeries. Beka needs expensive treatment. With the money I saved with great difficulty, which of the children should I buy medicine for? Jaba? And how will I look Beka in the eyes afterward? Because of this damned poverty, I, an exhausted mother, have to make a terrible choice between my children — which one should I give the last painkiller to, when I see both writhing in pain…”

Poverty, illness and pain – these three words alone describe the childhood of five-year-old Jaba and three-year-old Beka.

The hungry boy himself did not spare the last piece of bread for the hungry puppy.

How much kindness and love fits in his little heart! Are we really going to hurt this angel’s kind heart? Small but clever, Jaba understands that the “unknown aunt” has come to their home to tell everyone the story of two unfortunate brothers.

With a heavy heart, I left the village of Meria in Ozurgeti. On the way, I couldn’t stop thinking about the eyes of five-year-old Jaba and three-year-old Beka. A spark of hope flickered in those sad eyes.

For five-year-old Jaba, I, the “unknown aunt” who came to a distant village from a big city, am associated with a fairy tale character: the one who, finding himself in a big city, tells the other characters his story, and they perform a miracle, and then the child will no longer have a sixth finger. And the pain from the hernia will no longer torment him.

And now I, a correspondent for the Chernovetskyi Fund, am writing this article from Tbilisi, and one question haunts me: “What will happen if I deprive a child of hope?” What will happen is that the poor boy will become convinced that good characters exist only on the bright pages of fairy tales…
