He once believed that love was forever. He picked out a ring, dreamed of their wedding, and whispered to her about a future filled only with light.

But one morning, the light was gone. He opened his eyes – and saw nothing but black silence, endless as betrayal.

In one of the photos taken before the tragedy, Giorgi is smiling – his eyes shining, his arms wrapped around the woman he loved. He was that happy back then, looking out at a world full of color. Who could have imagined that soon those same eyes would see only darkness?

As he was learning to breathe in the dark, she left. Without saying goodbye, with no words, no pity. She said she couldn’t be with someone “sick” and simply disappeared. He was left alone – blind, broken, humiliated by pain. The darkness around him and the darkness inside became one.

– Did you forgive her?

Giorgi: “Is there any other way but forgiveness? Let her be happy… if she can. She lives in another city now. 

“I didn’t understand why,” he continues softly. – I lost my sight… but it turned out love was blind – not me, but her.”

For a long time, Giorgi didn’t leave the house. He sat silently in the corner, counting the days and his insulin shots. He lost hope – in people, and in himself. So many times, he wanted to just disappear, to stop existing.

But deep inside, a tiny spark refused to die. A few months ago, almost by accident, he came across the Chernovetskyi Fund online. And for the first time in many years, he decided not to give up He decided to fight – for his life, for his sight, for himself.

Giorgi has had insulin-dependent diabetes since he was five. Since the age of 26, his eyes began failing him – redness, pain, bursting capillaries.

Now Giorgi can see only 3% with his right eye, and his left eye is completely blind. According to doctors, his optic nerve is severely swollen. The first surgery brought no results; the second one in 2022, only worsened the pain. Now, his only hope is an operation in Turkey – such procedures aren’t available in Georgia.

Its cost is nearly $16,000 – an impossible amount for his family.

Giorgi lives with his mother and father in an old house, where the second floor has collapsed and is uninhabitable. 

Their total income is barely over 1,000 lari: 440 lari from his pension and 900 from his mother’s salary. 

His mother works in a grocery store. His father takes on occasional home repairs to bring in at least a minimal income.

Ilia, father: “My son has been suffering for so long… He’s still so young. Please, if you can, help my boy to restore his sight…  I’m begging you,”  

Giorgi does not complain. He has learned to see with his heart. But he still dreams of seeing the light again. Not for himself, but for those who still stand by him. “I just want to see my mother’s smile, – he says. – I want to prove that even in darkness, you can choose not to give up. And one day, I want to have children – many children – and kiss their eyes all the time…” 

How unbearable it is when the person you love most abandons you at your darkest moment…And how much courage it takes to survive such pain. God is helping – He’s the one who brought him to us. Now it’s our turn to help him – so he can see the light again.
