Lela is suffering from a severe, dreadful disease – coxarthrosis, a degenerative hip joint disease that causes not only unbearable pain but often leads to paralysis… and sometimes even to suicide – because the pain becomes simply impossible to endure.

This is a good, loving Georgian family… and such terrible misfortune has struck them!

Look at them – Roini and Lela, almost forty years ago:

beautiful and happy. Almost fifty years ago, Roini promised his beautiful Lela that his love would last forever – through every hardship life could bring. Today, fate has come to collect on that promise. Sorrow and pain have found their way to the Kozmava home.

The poor woman weeps bitterly. She begs for salvation.

Lela: “The pain is so unbearable that I feel like banging my head against the wall in despair. Even the strongest painkillers no longer work. Maybe death would be better than this miserable existence…” 

Lela suffers from an advanced stage of coxarthrosis. It’s a disease that destroys the hip joint, causes excruciating pain, and eventually leads to complete paralysis.

And indeed, this poor woman cannot take a single step on her own anymore. Worse still – she can no longer even stand on her feet.

With the same tenderness he had decades ago when he first declared his love, Roini holds his beloved wife’s hand – a hand that now belongs to a woman who can no longer walk.

Reporter: “Soon all of Georgia — and Georgians abroad — will hear about your suffering. What would you like to say to them?”

Lela: “I’m so embarrassed to ask for help when there’s already so much sorrow in Georgia. But I’m human being too… and I can’t bear this torment any longer. There’s only one way to escape this hell – joint replacement surgery.”

Dear readers! for those who may not know – endoprosthetic surgery means replacing the damaged joint with an artificial implant. The cost of this operation is about $13,000.

Roini: “If I could, I would give my own life without hesitation – if only my Lela could be free from pain! But we don’t have that kind of money… and honestly, we never did.

We’ve always worked hard in our little garden, but how could the money from a few vegetables ever cover even the medical tests before surgery?” Still, we pray and rely on the kindness of our compatriots.  If we lose hope – it’s better to die. With his wrinkled hands, Grandpa Roini tries to earn at least a few lari…

In the evenings, he sweeps the yard and washes the dishes – everything his wife used to do before her pain became unbearable. A good man! Every woman deserves a husband like this – loving and caring!

The lemon tree he planted long ago has grown tall – and now he carefully picks the best lemons for his queen, to make her favorite lemon tea.

Sometimes, the truest love shows itself in the smallest gestures.

Roini, 75 years old: “I try not to sleep too deeply at night – just in case she calls me for water or needs help to go to the toilet.”

Reporter: “Few people could do what you do, Grandpa. You’re a real hero.”

Roini: “God bless you, dear. And remember these words from a man who’s lived a hard life: You called me a hero – and I blushed. No one’s ever called me that before. But then I thought – real love must always be heroic. And if it’s not… then it was never love at all. Be happy with the man you choose – and may you never face such sorrow!”

When the old man said these words, his eyes filled with tears. Then I saw that his gaze had drifted – he was lost in a sea of memories.

From the Fund’s correspondent: I had so many more questions for this elderly yet still deeply-in-love Georgian couple… but it was time to return to Tbilisi. All I could say as I said goodbye was: “Don’t lose hope, my dear ones. I’m grateful to have met you – and we’ll come back soon, I promise – with good news!”

But one thought haunted me all the way back: what if we disappoint Grandpa Roini and Grandma Lela? What if their heroic love story ends in tragedy? Let us not allow the children of a foreign land to think that Georgians stood by and did nothing to save this poor grandmother from her hellish suffering.
