“I wish I were dead. I envy the people resting in their graves…” These were the very first words Grandma Zinaida said to me when I, a correspondent of the Fund, entered her home.  And in that moment, I felt ashamed… Ashamed that in a country devoted to the Mother of God, a kind old woman begs the Lord not for life – but for death.

REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO GOD!

Zinaida: “Yesterday I went to the pharmacy to buy my medicines. I didn’t have enough money… I was too embarrassed to admit it, so I said I’d be right back – as if my husband with the wallet was waiting outside. And now my heart aches… I lied to that poor girl behind the counter.”

Look at this woman’s face…

There may not be a single word in any language that can describe her pain.

Zinaida and her husband, Artur, have walked the thorny road of life together. And today, that road has led them to a charity canteen.

An old Tbilisi neighborhood… the sad colors of autumn…

Exhausted, hungry elderly people stand in line, hoping that today – just once – they might get soup with meat.

A photo from one of Tbilisi’s social canteens.

Alas, their hope didn’t come true. All they received was bread and a single can of beans – and that has to last them until tomorrow.

As a correspondent of the Fund, I have just one harmless question to the “high officials” of Tbilisi: How many times a day do you eat? And if it’s not a state secret – what does your menu look like?

Zinaida: “I can’t even remember when I last had meat soup… But I still remember its taste. I love fruit… but it’s so expensive I can’t buy any. When I go outside, I look up at the trees — maybe at least one has a fruit left on it…” She said this as though she tore the words straight from her soul.

I felt she wanted to tell me something else but was too shy. At last she gathered the courage.

Zinaida: “My child… for many years my husband and I ate at the free canteen founded by your founder, Mr. Leonid Chernovetskyi. There was everything: soups with meat, fried chicken, hot broths, fish, fruit. When we walked in starving, it didn’t feel like a canteen – it felt like entering a restaurant. But more important than the food was something else: the staff treated us so warmly that, for a short moment, we forgot we were lonely, forgotten old people…”

Our dear grandmother fell down the stairs and broke her leg.

Her bones didn’t heal. She suffers unbearable pain…

She cannot even put on a sock by herself.

And her husband cares for her with the same love he had in his youth.

Zinaida’s tragedy began back in her school years. She was in a terrible accident. Her internal organs were so badly damaged that doctors believed she wouldn’t survive. She lived only by a miracle. She came back to life dreaming of starting a family and having many children…But one day she learned the awful truth – she would never be able to become a mother.

Zinaida: “When I heard that… I ran into a church and cried before God: ‘Why, Lord, have You punished me so?’

Then I sat in the courtyard, in tears… And suddenly I felt someone looking at me. It was a young man. And in that moment, I realized that love at first sight is real…”

Artur: “When I asked her to marry me, she refused right away.
It hurt – I thought she didn’t love me. Later she told me she could never have children, and that’s why she said no. But I loved her so deeply that I said: if she marries me, I will never let go of her hand – not until the last moment of our lives.”

And from that moment on, their hands remained joined forever.

Zinaida suffers from severe asthma. Artur struggles with diabetes. And in this vast world, not a single person has stood by them.

Water pours from their ceiling. Who can count how many years they’ve been woken at night by icy drops falling onto their faces?

They asked the local authorities for help but were refused.

She showed me the official refusal letter herself.

And yet she never said a single bad word about those officials… Such is the heart of this gentle woman.

Correspondent of the Fund: “Grandma, if you could turn back time, what would your greatest wish be?”

Zinaida: “Children… many children…”

When he heard this, Artur’s eyes filled with tears.

The old man wiped them away with his wrinkled hands – tears of pain and a life that never came to be.

Dear friends of the Fund… sadly, we cannot turn time back. And even if we could – her deepest wish, to have children, still could not be fulfilled. So what can we do now? Will these unfortunate elderly people leave this world without ever feeling the warmth of children and grandchildren? There is an answer. You, friends of the Fund, can give them something they have never had: the feeling of a family.

Be their children. Be their grandchildren.  Their hearts are open to your love.

They ask nothing in return. They do not need expensive furniture, appliances, or luxury.

They dream only of this: That during the rain, icy drops won’t fall onto their faces. That this winter, they will have a heater. That they will have a gas stove – so they can at least make hot tea when there is no meat soup.

Kind people… If these elderly souls leave this world without ever receiving help, you can be sure – they will not complain to God. But what shall we say when the time comes to stand before the Highest Judgment?

If you are willing to visit the family and help them in person, here is their address: Tbilisi, 8 Amaghleba Str.
