Six little angels and their mother, fighting alone… How can we remain indifferent?

I heard it right at the doorstep – a child’s raw, heartbreaking cry.

As I came closer, I saw a scene that could break even the strongest heart: five-year-old Tornike, his face buried in his mother’s chest, sobbing as if his whole little world had collapsed.

– Why are you crying, sweetheart?

He didn’t answer. He only clung harder to his mother’s clothes. Shy. Embarrassed. A Georgian boy – and Georgian boys don’t cry “in front of a lady.”

Beside him stood his mother, Eka Digmelashvili – a true Georgian mother. A mother of six. A woman whose hands are the only fortress her children have.

Eka held Tornike close, stroked his head, and quietly told me: “He cries like this often. He doesn’t understand why I can’t buy him the things he asks for…Sometimes it’s just a broken toy car, or a new book. But he doesn’t know how expensive even the smallest things have become…”

She paused, then added softly: “Thank you to the Chernovetskyi Fund for coming. We’ve been waiting for you…” – The relief in her voice felt like a heavy weight had finally been lifted from her heart.

How can your own heart not fill with warmth after hearing this? How can you not thank God for giving us another chance to bring hope… to bring a spark of life?

The Digmelashvili family lives on the outskirts of the city, in a relative’s house. A house that isn’t theirs. A roof that isn’t theirs. And all of the household burdens fall on one woman.

Six children fill the four rooms with laughter, noise, little quarrels, prayers… and, sadly, constant need. A need that grows faster than they do.

Their father left two years ago. He rarely visits them. He doesn’t help. Since then, Eka has been everything:
mother, father, home, support, and hope. But her heart hurts the most for eight-year-old Sandro.

When he was just one year old, doctors diagnosed brain damage. He can barely talk, doesn’t retain words, avoids contact. It’s as if he lives in a quiet world of his own, calling for his mother only with his eyes.

Sandro has disability status.

Eka: “Every day I learn to understand him without words… He feels everything – my worry, my love, my pain”.”

Nikolaz, 10 – a quiet, thoughtful, shy boy
– asks me: “Auntie, how did you know we’re so cold? Did you come to bring us a heater?”

Gabriel, 7 –  he doesn’t ask for toys, gadgets, or sweets. He simply wants the house to be warm… for his mother to stay strong… for each day to be just a little easier.

Tornike, 5 – gentle and sensitive – needs his mother’s arms more than anyone.

And little three-year-old Liliana – the small light that keeps the house from falling into complete darkness.
The gas stove barely works. There’s no hot water at all. In winter they have no heater – the children are freezing.

Their income isn’t enough even for the basics:
food, clothes, transport, medications, Sandro’s needs. Every month feels like stepping over a cliff. Still, Eka keeps smiling for the children. She keeps praying. She keeps going – even though her strength is fading.

What can change their lives right now are simple, essential things:

• food
• a gas heater
• a gas water heater
• a working gas stove

These are not luxuries or whims – Without them, winter will be too harsh, too cold, too dangerous.

Six little angels were waiting for us. Waiting for warmth. Waiting for hope. Waiting for a hand to help them up when life becomes too heavy.

Isn’t it a miracle that, for these children, our Fund and its friends are symbols of hope? Isn’t it a blessing to be able to help?
