Thirteen-year-old Mariam can neither talk nor walk. And thank God she doesn’t understand that – without exaggeration – any day could be her last. Only God can fully heal her, though what do we in Georgia really know about the world’s latest medical breakthroughs? Still, everyone at the Fund will now be searching for a miracle. But so that this beautiful child doesn’t die from something accidental, the family needs many simple household aids and basic items. They need our help.
REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO GOD!
Every day could be Mariam’s last.
Every morning, her young mother Medea’s first thought is to check whether her daughter is still alive. She comes up to the bed and watches her for a few seconds. Listens to her breathing.
A faint rise and fall of her chest – a tiny sign that the night passed without seizures.
Mariam 13 years old. Her world is small, quiet, lifeless – filled with suffering and the constant expectation of something irreversible The moment her eyes open, her life depends entirely on others. She has brain damage and a congenital heart defect.
Medea’s greatest dream is to hear her daughter say the word “Mom” at least once. But, sadly, she can only allow herself this dream in her sleep. The moment she wakes up, she returns to the terrible reality. God… what pain.
A mother learns to notice what nobody else sees. A small trembling movement. A change in breathing. A faint shift in her color. She reacts before anyone else realizes what is happening.
“She freezes, and I know it’s starting,” Medea says.
“I hold her and pray for it to pass. And every time I think the same thing: Will she come back to me?”
Most days are the same – heavy, exhausting. Feed her. Lift her. Wash her. Turn her so her bones don’t ache.
Medea gave all her youth to her daughter. When her classmates and friends went out to celebrate something, she could never join them – Mariam cannot be left alone even for half an hour. Medea has become her daughter’s lifelong nurse. A true hero. That’s what they would call her in the U.S., in England… One day, mothers like her should have monuments in our parks and squares. And this story – known only to us – we guard with great care. These are the heroic mothers living in our tiny homeland.
Watching every sip so the child doesn’t choke. Waking up again at night to check her breathing. Any mistake can lead to disaster.
But some moments hurt even more.
When Mariam tries to move her fingers and they don’t obey. When her eyes search for her mother but her mouth cannot form a sound. When her body refuses to listen, and the girl inside remains trapped.
“She understands everything,” Medea whispers. “She just can’t show it. That’s what hurts the most.”
The family lives modestly. The father takes any job he can get in the village. The mother cannot leave the house even for a minute.
Their income is minimal – a disability pension and a small social allowance. Barely enough. Sometimes they must choose between food and medicine.
During strawberry season they sell whatever grows on their tiny plot, but it doesn’t change the overall picture.
There is no treatment that could fix the situation. But there are things that can make Mariam’s life easier: diapers, food… the simplest essentials. The family asked the local administration for help and was denied. So now their hope is us. Their requests are very simple: food, diapers, a wardrobe for the children’s clothes, a gas stove.
“We are very tired,” Medea admits. “But we’re not giving up. We just need help to keep going.”
This is the truth. Without embellishment. Without exaggeration.
A mother watching over her daughter day and night because even a slight fever could take her away. A girl living inside a body that will not obey. A family fighting for the most basic things.
They are not asking for anything big. They are asking for the chance to live with dignity. Your help can give them what they desperately need.
“I’ve said everything that was in my heart… and it feels a little lighter,” Medea tells us. “It’s hard to ask, but I will: we really need food, a gas stove, a wardrobe for the children’s clothes, a modern, comfortable bed. And if possible, to take Mariam to a dentist to fix her teeth.”
Your support can make Mariam safer. Your kindness can lift part of the burden from a mother who carries far too much.
