“Don’t let us become complete orphans. No one can replace loving parents. Our daddy died of cancer… forever. And now cancer is taking our mommy too. Please save her.  We have no one left in Georgia — or anywhere in the world.” These desperate words from two small children left everyone in our Fund speechless.  Friends, we are facing an incredibly difficult mission: to save a grieving widow, a brave mother, from death – and to make sure these little angels do not lose a parent for the second time.

Elmira, who has already survived a hellish battle with cancer, is begging for only one thing: “Help me get through rehabilitation. Help me stay a mother, not a memory.”

She is only 45. Must a mother of two really leave this world at such an age? Why, dear God?

Elmira: “The bleeding started suddenly… and it turned out to be cancer. I went through 11 rounds of chemotherapy. It seemed things were improving, but after one of the radiation sessions everything got worse… I felt unbearable pain, my body swelled, and I was close to dying. I’m sure that the doctors damaged something in my body during the radiation therapy, and that’s why all of this happened to me…”

In December the bleeding and terrible symptoms began, leading to the frightening diagnosis: malignant cervical cancer.

Since February she has endured heavy treatment: chemo, radiation, procedures that left her body exhausted and unresponsive.

Recently came a severe complication, hospitalization, and emergency interventions that saved her life – but changed her daily existence, her abilities, even her movements.

Today she lives on painkillers. She can hardly lie down; every movement brings a sharp, tearing pain. Elmira now needs to undergo another major surgery. Without it, she has no chance to survive.

She has already walked through hell. The surgery will be covered by the state. There is a chance for her to survive. But her chance to return to her children is in our hands.

Rehabilitation is her only wish – her only chance to be a mother again, to take care of her home again, to truly live again.

And when she says: “Please… help me stand,” it is impossible to look away.

These children live in constant tension – as if every new day can bring both hope and the worst news at once.

Elene is only 14. Every night she falls asleep afraid – afraid that her mother will get worse and she won’t hear it, won’t be able to help.

Elene: “Every day I pray to God to heal my mommy… I love her so much. Please help us so my mom can be healthy…”

Sasha, 8 years old, explains things to adults in the simple way only children can: “Mom is sick, but we will make her better. We have to.”

Their grandmother, Luiza, suffers from severe coxarthrosis, cataracts, and spinal pain. She can move only inside the house – with crutches. ut she says: “I must stay strong. Until Elmira stands up… I must not fall.”

The last years of the poor old woman were pure torment. The grief of losing her son and the pain of her grandchildren becoming orphans had barely begun to subside when she received another devastating blow: her daughter was dying. Would these little children, who had already lost their father, now be left without a mother as well?

This woman carries the entire home on her shoulders – her ailing daughter, her two grandchildren, and the constant fear that without help they simply won’t make it.

Elmira’s husband, the father of her children, also died of cancer several years ago. These children have already lost one parent. Please – don’t let this cruel disease take their mother as well. Today the family’s only income is minimal social allowance and a pension – sums every Georgian knows are barely enough for anything. Buying medicine or paying for rehabilitation is out of the question. Some months they don’t even have enough money for food.

Misfortune has fallen on this family again and again. God has sent them many trials, and now, by His will, He has led them to us. We must help Elmira and her family.

Eight-year-old Sandro and fourteen-year-old Elene must not become orphans. They love their mother more than anything in the world.

After surgery, Elmira will need rehabilitation – and this is where we must step in. Medications, medical supplies, food – we must do everything in our power to help her stand up again and return to a life without pain, to a future where she can embrace her children freely.
