At Christmas, the Chernovetskyi Fund received a call from Nani, the 83‑year‑old mother of Mamuka, 54. Unable to make the call herself, she borrowed the phone of a kind neighbor. On the line was an elderly woman, sobbing like a child. Through her tears, she pleaded: “Please… please, my dear, come to my home and save me from this nightmare. I have already buried my husband and two of my sons. If my last – my beloved Mamuka – dies as well, what will become of me? I cannot bear to lose a fourth man. I don’t even have the strength to walk to the cemetery anymore. Bury me first – the pain in my heart is unbearable. God forbid anyone should ever endure such suffering.”

Fund representatives went to see Grandma Nani immediately. The conditions they encountered were devastating.

Mamuka, 54: “I am like a living corpse. For 25 years I’ve been lying motionless in this bed – like in a coffin. I can’t move my legs, can’t sit up, can’t stand, can’t even turn onto my side. At night I scream from unbearable, hellish pain. God forbid anyone ever face such a trial.”

The toes of poor Mamuka have rotted away. His wounds are festering, bleeding, and infected. The only chance to save his life is an urgent amputation – before the gangrene spreads. 

If the infection rises any higher, Mamuka will die in his bed. Slowly. In agony. There is almost no time left. 

These photos come from Mamuka’s army album. He served for two years in Odessa. After returning home, the nightmare began. First came neck pain. Doctors diagnosed severe degenerative disease of the spine. A young man once full of strength began walking with a cane – and then became completely paralyzed.

Mamuka remained fearless even under heavy fire. Who could have imagined that such a brave man would rot alive? His body is breaking down, as if he were already dead – and his 83-year-old mother watches it all.

The elderly mother exhausts herself caring for her son, but her strength is no longer enough. And there is no one to help her. Grandma Nani has buried two of her sons with her own hands. One died from epilepsy. The other from a heart attack. Her husband could not bear the suffering – his heart gave out.

Mamuka, 54: “I urgently need surgery. But I could never raise the money for treatment on my own. It would take me 30 years – and I won’t live that long.”

They live in extreme poverty and in utterly dilapidated conditions Grandma Nani washes clothes and bedding by hand – there is no washing machine in the house. This is an unbearable physical burden for an elderly woman.

Nani, 83: “I grew up in an orphanage. My whole life has been suffering. I never thought such a terrible old age awaited me. I would rather die than watch my son suffer like this.  The worst thing is that I can do nothing to help him. I have high blood pressure, a weak heart, and caring for a bedridden person is incredibly hard for me.”

Nani, 83: My dear, I’m almost deaf now. I need a hearing aid — I’m afraid I won’t hear my son calling me at night in pain.” 

Mamuka, 54: “My mother is my guardian angel. She is my hands and my legs. She washes me, feeds me, turns me over. If something happens to her — what will happen to me?”

Reporter: Were you married? 

Mamuka, 54: “After my army service, I was planning to get married. But when I became ill, the woman I loved married someone else. My dreams of a family and children were shattered.” 

Reporter: What do you think your life would be like if you had children? 

Mamuka, 54: “Children are happiness. I would have been so happy to have them. They would care for me. Now there is no one to care for me but my elderly mother.

As Christmas approached, the elderly woman lit candles and prayed to God: “If my son’s suffering will not end, then take me instead, Lord. I beg You – do not make me watch him suffer.”

Nani, 83: “Lord, save and protect my son. I believe You will send us kind people who will help Mamuka get the surgery he needs. Do not leave us alone, I beg You, God.” 

Friends, is there any love stronger than a mother’s love for her child? Here is a living example. God is giving us a chance to help an elderly mother who has devoted her entire life to her gravely ill son. Do not turn away.
