Three-year-old Emily cries from hunger. Five-year-old Giorgi suffers from a terrible illness. And nine-year-old Mariam goes to school in a spring jacket in the freezing winter cold. Poor little ones. These children do not even have beds – they sleep on the floor. They have the right to be cared for by those who love God, and whom God loves and helps in life.

“I am hungry, I am cold, I dream of a winter jacket.” – Mariam, 9 years old.

These are the words Mariam wrote on a piece of paper. And they are not just words. This is a message from a desperate little girl to you – God-fearing people.

Lord, what beautiful faces our children have…

When I, a journalist from the Chernovetskyi Fund, visited the Beridze family, Mariam had just returned home from school. I could not believe my eyes… In the January frost, the girl was wearing a spring jacket.

Mariam (9 years old): “Auntie, last year and this year I go to school in winter wearing only this jacket, because I don’t have a warm one. How I wish I had at least an old or torn winter jacket. Mom would sew it up, and I would wear it with joy.”

Fund Journalist: “Mariam, do your teacher and the parents of the other children at school know that you don’t have a winter jacket?”

Mariam: “They know, Auntie. They know…”

Fund Journalist: “Mariam, tell me, has no one ever offered you -” 

(I didn’t manage to finish my question, because the smart girl immediately understood what I was asking about and lowered her head… as if she felt ashamed for others. And the silence of this child had already become my answer.)

This is five-year-old Giorgi. This single photograph is enough to understand how much the child is suffering. The boy has been diagnosed with autism. He cannot talk at all. He only makes some individual sounds. Yet he is intelligent, he thinks… and he wants to express his thoughts in words. The pain and suffering caused by this futile attempt psychologically destroy the child.

The poor children do not even have beds…

The smart boy noticed that I was looking at his torn trousers. He became embarrassed and covered his eyes with his hands.

My God, can this really be true? Who would complain about torn trousers when a child wears torn socks in the freezing winter?

While their mother puts three-year-old Emily and five-year-old Giorgi to bed, Mariam chops firewood with her tiny fingers so the children won’t be cold. And she is wearing the same light jacket she goes to school in. You have probably already guessed why, dear friends.

Sick Giorgi, weakened by hunger and cold, fell asleep on this dreadful armchair. Even homeless dogs on the street have a better “sleeping place.”

There is no food at home, so three-year-old Emily eats a little bread soaked in milk.

The children’s mother, Mzia, is only 36 years old. But extreme poverty has “turned” her into a fifty-year-old woman.

Mzia (36 years old): “If someone asked me what I imagine hell to be like, I would answer without hesitation: ‘When a mother watches her children suffer.’ I have never even imagined a luxurious life. My only dream is for my children to sleep in beds, not on the floor.”

Yes, in the poor Beridze family, sick and hungry children care for homeless animals. This is what happens when a heart is full of kindness…

These smart children understood that the “unknown auntie” came to their home precisely to tell their story to the “kind fairies.”
