With only three tiny baby teeth, one-year-old Mate cannot bite through the last small piece of stale bread his two-year-old sister Nelli shared with him through tears.

The scene I witnessed as a journalist will remain in my heart forever.

Why are they suffering? Can Georgia really not feed even its smallest children?

Mate is trying to gnaw on the stale bread – he has only three tiny teeth, and every bite is a struggle.

Crying, Nelli gives her rusks to her little brother:

“Mate, you eat… I’ll eat later.”

Mzevinar, 40-year-old (Mom): “Just look at them for a minute… We live in a dilapidated house. I can’t beg, because when my children grow up, I don’t want them to be called poor beggars. We have nothing in the house – no TV, no refrigerator, no gas stove – not to mention even the most basic things. Neighbors advised me to contact you, but I don’t know who you are or what your possibilities are… And if there’s nothing else, then at least bring us food, so that for a day, two, three, or maybe even a week I can feed my children, whom I love more than life itself, and so my heart can finally bloom.”

Mate, 1-year-old: “Mom… milk?”

Little Mate cries and cannot fall asleep without a baby bottle.  But what can it be filled with when there is neither baby formula nor milk? 

Mzevinar, 40-year-old (Mom): “I just pour water. Sometimes tea from a teabag… and that’s how I put him to sleep.”

Nelli, 2 years old: “Kindergarten is nice, they feed us tasty food there. I ate everything they gave me, down to the very last crumb – soup, porridge, fruits.  And there are lots of toys there, but my brother and I don’t have even one.”

Mzevinar, 40-year-old (Mom): “We don’t have beds. Only old, rusty ones. The local authorities allowed us to live in this house because we were homeless. It’s cold here – there’s no heater, no stove. I wrap the children as best I can, but they don’t have a single warm piece of clothing.”

Look where the child sleeps! This is not a bed – it’s a wreck.

Before, Mzevinar took any job she could – in the fields, harvesting crops. Now there is no one to leave the children with. Her husband left, abandoning her alone.

Corr. “Mzevinar, tell us about your childhood. What was it like?”

Mzevinar, 40-year-old (Mom): “I grew up in poverty. My father died when I was two. My mother worked on a farm, and so we wouldn’t die of hunger, we had to eat food meant for pigs. I don’t want my children to go through the same thing. I will be both mother and father to them.”

Mzevinar, 40-year-old (Mom): “The children miss their father, but he isn’t here. I can’t force him to come back. But I dream that they grow up in a complete family… that they have a normal childhood, not a fight for survival.”

The children’s health is poor. A simple cold with a fever up to 40°C causes seizures; the babies are resuscitated in the hospital, and weeks are needed for recovery. “They’re sick right now,” the mother says, touching their foreheads. “I’m afraid the fever will rise again.” I don’t even have money for medication.”

Mzevinar, 40-year-old (Mom): “We don’t have a bathroom or a toilet. We bathe at relatives’ homes. There is no washing machine, and small children need to be changed dozens of times a day.”

These unfortunate children don’t have a single toy.  No doll, no toy car, no soft teddy bear to hug when it’s cold and scary. When Mate starts crying, his mother gives him old clothespins to hold – that’s all she has to distract him.

Sometimes Mzewinar takes the children outside. They play snowballs. But the joy lasts only a few minutes. They have no gloves. Their little hands quickly turn red and numb from the cold, and their mother takes them back into the house.

You can help this family survive. Any help – food, baby formula, warm clothes, blankets – will give these children a chance at life. The children need our support right now.

Don’t walk past. These huge children’s eyes, filled with hunger and fear, will not survive another day without your help – while we still can save them.
