“Before I die, I want to tell you and the friends of the Fund about the tragedy I have carried in my heart for half a century – and which I don’t want to take to the grave,” said a trembling voice over the phone at the Chernovetskyi Fund. It belonged to 76-year-old grandmother Tamara. We, representatives of the Fund, immediately went to the village of Poladaantkari. What we saw was worse than anything we could imagine – a lonely elderly woman, exhausted by illness, hunger, and cold… God, does no one need this pious grandmother?
REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO GOD!
Fund journalist: “Grandmother, it isn’t raining – why are you holding an umbrella?” I asked evasively (it seemed to me that because of her advanced age, the woman might have imagined it was raining).
And the grandmother gave me an answer that made me ashamed of myself. “Dear, all my life I dreamed that someone would protect me, take care of me, support me. But I am leaving this world without ever feeling that. When unbearable loneliness overwhelms me, I hold this umbrella in my hand – because it is the only thing that protects me.”
Hearing these words, I immediately understood how deep and delicate her soul was.
Seventy-six-year-old Tamara suffers terribly from leg pain. She can take only a few steps, and only with the help of a cane. According to X-rays, she urgently needs surgery – otherwise, soon she won’t even be able to get out of bed.
But Tamara refused the operation. Do you know why? Because there is not a single person in the world who would bring her kefir and bread after surgery, or help her return home after being discharged from the hospital.
Tamara (76-year-old): “Dear, I know that after the surgery doctors and nurses wouldn’t let me starve if they knew I was homeless…But it’s embarrassing. I’m ashamed.”
In her youth, Tamara held a managerial position at a nitrogen plant. Actually, she personally supervised the production process. Who could have imagined that this educated, strong-willed, proud, fair, dignified, joyful, and devout woman would one day become a homeless old lady?

Even this dilapidated hut you see in the photo does not belong to her. But who would complain about that when her stomach aches from hunger and her skin burns from cold?
Fifty-five years ago, a terrible tragedy happened in Tamara’s life.
She was about to become a mother. She could hardly contain her joy, waiting for her child to be born. But on one fateful day, she not only lost her unborn baby – she also lost the ability to ever become a mother.
Tamara (76-year-old): “Oh, that cursed day… I was riding public transport to the hospital for another medical check, to make sure my little angel was all right in my womb. At the same time, I was stroking my belly so my baby could feel a mother’s warmth. That was the last time I ever touched my child… There was a deep pothole in the road the driver didn’t notice, and… in that cursed moment, my unborn baby’s heartbeat stopped forever.”
Friends of the Fund, the most horrifying thing is that during this tragedy Tamara not only lost her unborn child – she also suffered an injury that forever deprived her of the ability to have children. Imagine the trauma for a young woman hearing such words from a doctor.
Fifty-five years have passed since that fateful day. Tamara is now 76 years old – and she never told anyone about this tragedy. Only today, half a century later, has she decided to share it with you, friends of the Fund.
Yes — the “grave” of Tamara’s unborn child lies in her heart. Perhaps that is why her heart is still filled with warmth and love.
Despite illness and extreme hardship, Tamara takes care of young plants. Pomegranates, almonds, peaches…
“They breathe too,” the old woman said quietly.
Does this pious woman deserve to dream of hot soup and a warm room only in her imagination?
Does this poor grandmother deserve to wash dishes and laundry outdoors in icy water during a freezing winter?
Tamara (76-year-old): “If fate had turned out differently, I would have grandchildren your age,” she said to me, a journalist of the Chernovetskyi Fund – and it felt as though she poured out her entire heart.

I stroked her wrinkled hand so that, if only for a moment, she could feel the warmth she had always lacked…
Yes… this dignified old woman will leave this world, and no one will visit her grave. No one will plant a rose there in her honor.
The only living beings who will miss her are these dogs. She found them frozen in the snow when they were puppies and brought them home. They never leave her side.
Even if a stranger offers them meat, they will choose Tamara and not follow that stranger. Do you know why? Because a dog is the only creature on earth that will choose death over betrayal. That is the difference between dogs and many people.
As we said goodbye, the grandmother was crying…
And you, reading this article now – if you believe that you are a human being created by the Lord in His image – do not pass by the tragic story of this pious grandmother. You who ate a good meal today and will sleep in a warm bedroom – I beg you, before you fall asleep, imagine for just one moment the face of this old woman… An old woman whose grave no one will plant roses on after her death.
